I know there are lists of cult characteristics, but if you wanted one quick and easy test, what would it be?

I think the way leaders are viewed is a good gauge. For example, if questioning the leaders simply isn't done, because that wouldn't make any sense, it's a cult. No doubt about it.

Members give their moral autonomy to the cult. What's moral about that?

From a review of a book titled, "The Age of Choice":

"For centuries the right to choose for oneself in virtually all the key aspects of life would have seemed either absurd or wicked. "What death is worse for the soul," wrote St. Augustine, 'than the freedom to err?"

"In the wake of the expulsion from Eden, life was organized to reduce to a minimum the scope of
decision-making. Anyone who was not perniciously rebelling against the order of things had to accept what the authorities in the family, the state, and the church saw fit to impose."

And so, "go-along-to-get-along "was born. And thrived as a survival technique from the dawn of man to present day. Do as they say and things will be okay.

Religion--especially Mormonism---takes a step further. Not only are their followers doing as expected, but they are subliminally coerced into believing they chose this course themselves after deep introspection and reasonable considerations. I prayed, so I "know". I felt the spirit when I read the BoM, so I "know". I found out for myself! No one forced me to do this.

Number one thing a Mormon will tell you is they have not been fooled. Number one cult tactic is to make people think they are in control of their own destiny, that their choices are right.

"We are so excited that little Johnny has chosen to be baptized!"

We don't get fooled again

What if you believe that all cults are true?

Then you have a good chance of cleaning toilets as a volunteer somewhere.
