so dressing like this is pretty common where I'm from....
But I have UTAH family and friends on Facebook, and now is PROM time. And I have to say, I'm a little shocked at the prom dresses I'm seeing.
I asked my sister about it, and she said, "There are no rules any more. As far as dress standards, kids are just told to do what they think is best."

Is this true?
Utah people, is this really true?

Not true. Every year there's a furor over kids getting turned away from their proms for their dress. 99% girls. And the rules are totally arbitrary. Necklines, hemlines, backless/strapless, even sleeves. And it depends on the teacher doing the judging. They let some girls in while another girl wearing the exact same dress gets let in. And each High School seems to have different rules and enforcement. A few years ago, Wasatch High School got in trouble for ruining kids yearbook pics. They photoshopped in necklines, sleeves and also photoshopped out tattoos. Kids that were targeted were outraged and rightly so. Nazi Mormon censors. Every year.

When my daughter went to the prom in I would guess 2003, she had the only dress that was "modest." We weren't active and she was anti, but she had all friends who were mormon. I was surprised. My son's girlfriend was also not dressed "modest." My daughter still has that first prom dress. She worked for princess and got good deals on cruises (she just stopped working there this month). But she used that dress for years going on cruises. We got it for $35 at I can't remember which store--on the clearance rack.

But her's was the only mormon style dress amongst all her friends.

I occasionally took a glance at the TV show, "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" that was on a couple of months ago. I was amused to see that the women wore pretty much whatever they wanted to -- i.e. miniskirts and bikinis, but many of them still shunned alcoholic beverages.

Summer. You're usually pretty sharp. But if you think that "Mormon Housewives" or 'The secret lives of mormon lives" are close to any reality, you're way off. Or anything that you see on any "reality" show. It's all contrived melodrama designed to shock and intrigue you. It's all bullshit. All of it.

Having had two daughters who went through this ritual I am glad I went to an all boys school.

Scientology, Mormons (whoops, LDS), Jehovah's Witnesses, and tiny tiny Christian Science goofs all are sad because none can say "We're sorry, we were wrong, please forgive us!"
