This would be a masterstroke, because Nelson, Oaks, Holland Bednar, and Andersen hate gays and LGBT people. And one of the biggest growth potentials for the Church in the future is in Africa, where most cultures are very conservative and completely reject gay marriage or LGBTQ rights. So, filling the position with a homophobic conservative black African would quell the call for diversity and strengthen the future of the church, and church leaders could say, “Look how tolerant we are—we don’t just embrace white homophobes, we’ve gone global!”

Looking at the website url, I'm guessing that it's supposed to be a picture of something having to do with the Battle Star Galactica television series.

The basis of the Council of the 12 is taken directly from the church structure, since at least one of the main people involved in the series was Mormon if memory serves me correctly. I do not remember if it was a writer or producer.

The influence can be seen throughout the entire episode series if you were born and raised Mormon.

Thus the response of: Depends on which Quorum of the 12 you are referring to.

Larson later secured a then-unprecedented $1 million per episode budget for Battlestar Galactica. The show incorporated many themes from Mormon theology, such as sealing (marriage) for "time and eternity" and a "council of twelve". Larson, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in real life,[2][3] had been working on the concept since 1968 with former Star Trek producer Gene L. Coon mentoring him in its early development. Although, he originally wanted to name the series Adam's Ark, he instead opted for Galactica. He was later convinced to include the word "star" in the title to capitalize on the recently released film Star Wars, eventually morphing the title into Battlestar Galactica. Larson was similarly convinced to deviate from his plan to produce the property as a series of TV movies to a weekly hour-long series, which caught his crew by surprise with a production schedule more demanding than originally expected in terms of writing while it overwhelmed the series' budgetary limits.

Even with its generous budget, the series often recycled effects shots and was canceled after one season. The pilot episode, titled "Saga of a Star World" was edited into a two-hour theatrical film and a re-edit of the other episodes was released as a second theatrical feature film titled Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack. After the series was canceled, Larson went on to create a relatively low-budget sequel titled Galactica 1980, which was set many years later, when the Galactica had reached Earth. It was less successful than the original and was canceled after 10 episodes.

I don't think LDS Inc needs to worry about reinforcing its homophobic bona fides. Their position is quite well-established.

OTOH, they are trying to downplay their racist past, and a GA from Africa would certainly help with that. There are already a number of Black Seventies, and Black Regional Seventies or Area Authorities, or whatever they are called now. Seventies are the farm team for the Q15, so I expect at some point there will be a Black member of the Q15.

The only downside to that that I see is that there is a segment of LDS membership that is in fact racist, and a Black apostle would be a bridge too far for them. So the leaders will have to weigh the improved public perception against the loss of BIC, tithe-paying members. I think eventually they will have to appoint a Black apostle.

My thought exactly. The numbers bring pride and prestige, the legacy believers bring money.

It'll be a long time before the former becomes more important than the latter.

So you can get another idiot but with a different skin color? We have some African churches popping up in my area and they are just as full of would be Joel Osteens and Kenneth Copelands as the white churches are.

I think when it comes to the Q15, the church looks a lot more closely at one's bona fides. It's the most insider group in a church that is one giant insider group. In my opinion, it would take many years for a black African to crack the inner circle. And as BoJ mentions, a black African apostle is likely a bridge too far for the membership right now. I think that Soares and Gong are about as far as the church is willing to go at the present time in terms of diversity.

Look at what happened to Uchdorf. He's a white man with a good resume, but being German alone was enough to keep him out of the inner circle.

He was also more charismatic than the rest of the inner circle. Can't be having that.

Well, no black men nor any women apostles because, you know, racism and misogyny…

Go buy a dozen white eggs at the grocery store. Open it. Nothing draws your attention. But exchange one white egg with a brown-outer shell egg and it will definitely be the first thing you notice in the dozen. It will draw your attention as to why it isn't like the others.

Likewise, the Q12 can't allow the same to happen, especially in those group photos of the quorum. And depending how dark skinned the black guy is could make the comparison much greater.

Can't have the black guy stealing the photo shoot!

Just another way of looking at it.

OTOH, I remember watching telecasts of the Tab Choir singing. They seemed to make a point to show the rare black person singing, as if to make it look more diverse (IMO). It seemed that way in their magazines and pamphlets too. I think they would like to have a few token faces of diversity.

It's hard to know what message they would like to project, IMO. It already stands out in a negative way that there are no women.

I think the Q15 are well aware that they need to diversify top management from a PR point of view and to help recruiting in Africa. I don't think they think they need perspectives from other races. The issues they will need to consider are to find someone who is suffciently church-broke that he will not stir things up or advocate for honest dealings in apologizing for previous racist doctrines. Also, I think they will be crunching numbers to ensure that the first black man will never have a chance to ascend to the position of prophet. So it will be someone who is elderly, even among an elderly group of apostles.

Better question is why no Lamanites in top leadership?

After all, the book is written to them and the rest are an afterthought.
