From NPR:

https://www.npr.org/2025/08/15/nx-s1-5484938/mormon-women-can-wear-new-sacred-undergarments-some-wonder-why-now

Many Mormon women are celebrating the new garments, which they've been requesting for years. Others say the church's all-male leadership should have listened to them sooner. As for Layton, she's just excited.

"My shoulders, they, like, have never been more tan in my entire life," she said, laughing.

The redesign isn't available in the U.S. yet, but that's not stopping American women from getting their hands on the garments from other countries. That includes some social media fashion influencers who post about how to style the religious wear for their tens of thousands of followers.

But not all women are excited about the sleeve removal. Some are confused — they thought they were supposed to be different as Mormons, and now they're dressing like everyone else.

Other women are angry and wonder why they sacrificed to cover their shoulders for so long, only for them to be OK to show now, said Jana Riess, a member of the church and an American religion historian.

Just proves two things:

God is not the same today, yesterday, and forever.

Opinion Polls are mightier than God.

“Opinion Polls are mightier than God.”
God used to reveal his will through his chosen servants, the prophets. Now, even the most sacred information (e.g. the contents of the endowment) is revealed via surveys.

Joseph Smith played fast and loose with the Bible.

This has always been the inevitable result.

Opinion polls and the church's law firm are more important than God.

"...Supposed to be different as Mormons, and now they're dressing like everyone else."

I wouldn't complain about that. Who wants to demonstrate different-ness by sweltering in the summer heat? It was always a stupid idea that the patriarchy insisted be foisted on members.

From the article:

"...the church compares the garment to other religious wear like a nun's habit or the robes of a Buddhist monk."

Again with the "supposed to be different". Why on earth would the brainiacs at the top (aka the Brethren) liken their garment mandate to the attire of nuns and monks?

Also, even without sleeves, as the article states, wearing the extra layer of clothing during sweltering summer weather is still a sweaty proposition.

Why can't the men at the top be satisfied with the Mormon differentiation that exists apart from underwear: namely their scriptures, temple rites, doctrine 'n all that? Why bring underwear into it? How "modest" is it for females to be questioned by males about their undergarments?

Not modest. Just plain weird, in the eyes of most.

Mormons are not serious people. They are talking about their underwear being modified to show shoulders. I mean, really.

You don't realize how ridiculous that is until you are far out of their bubble.

By a controlling cult. If they can control what kind of underwear you must wear, controlling everything else is a piece of cake. Including, most importantly, your money.

Yeah. It's like Heavenly Father's Chief Influencer the Holy Ghost couldn't figure out how to use TikTok and they had to go to plan B instead--the old guys in that big building who don't know how to use TikTok either but do have great word of mouth.

"Some are confused — they thought...."

Because they were told what to think.

And in a another generation they'll be saying "they never changed them, they've always been this way."

Not a garment story, but a story about bread and the Sacrament.

Can't tell how many times my ward's Sacrament bread was stale, moldy or frozen. It was inevitable that the 14 year old assigned to bring bread forgot to do so. The reasonable thing to do was to go to the nearest grocery store and obtain a loaf. But these are unreasonable Mormons. It's a big deal of not shopping on Sunday so instead, a mad rush would be made to the nearest leader's home would lead to less than desirable outcomes. One time the leader didn't have extra bread to spare so he knocked on three different non members houses to demand a ransom of bread. Once again the store was a viable option.

The leaders never drove me to my house; my family lived in the boondocks. Sometimes it was my fault being assigned to bring bread and not telling my mom. Other times the extra loaf was used up at my house. The so called smart leaders and smart church rely on 14 year olds to bring bread slices. Pretty dumb.

Once again, we need to refer to the "Style Guide" when discussing this topic. Non-members may get the wrong idea, and think, (prohibited), less of our commitment to the importance and sacredness of the clothing, and place more focus on cut and "Style". This is why the "Style Guide" is always first consulted by the wise and informed.

I doubt God even acknowledges "garments". It could be that some Church financial guy said "Hey, let's change up the cut on the ladies undies, it might save us a few bucks in production costs."

These will sell like crazy! I wonder if there will be a markup for the new style. Conforming women wouldn’t want to be wearing the out-dated garments.

The Mormon Church: anything for a buck.

Almost no one is talking about the slip women can wear.

My niece was overjoyed to not have to worry about the long legged underpants showing when wearing a dress. I believe it is also sleeveless.

I haven't heard of a slip garment. I only knew of the sleeveless top change (in some areas).

I heard on a podcast that some Mormon ladies are finding work around ways to get the sleeveless garments which apparently are only being sold in certain limited areas.

The full and half slips are made of nylon. Nylon can be very hot to wear. It's not a breathable fabric. I've worn it when a skirt wants to cling to my legs, but not happily.

I've attended more than my fair share of churches, of various persuasions.

Never in my life has a single member, in any one of said churches, made personal inquiries of me, never mind regarding my underwear.

The longer I've been out, and the more the subject comes up, the stranger and weirder and creepier it is getting to seem.

I don't remember being all that bothered when they told me about the underwear thing as a potential new recruit. But it got many degrees more strange and uncomfortable when the bishop included underwear in his various assessments of my "worthiness".

And, this far out, it seems strange to me that I didn't question it or think it was OTT weird. In fact, I can't believe I went for it and now it kind of embarrasses me - I certainly don't tell anybody in my circle out here in the real world about it. I think I was so curious about the temple (that they talked up to be some momentous lifetime experience that would enhance my life a thousand-fold - it wasn't) that I just went along with whatever the missionaries/bishop etc had to say.

I don't even remember what I did with all my Mormon stuff. Must have tossed it. Or maybe I'll find it lurking in the basement next time I have a good clear-out. At which point, it's not sacred - I can just toss it out with that week's green bags (garbage). That's no doubt a grave sin in Mormon World. Oh well...

https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2025/09/07/sleeveless-lds-garments/

"Since sleeveless temple garments were announced last fall, Latter-day Saints in the U.S. have found lots of, well, ingenious ways to get their hands on multiple pairs in those styles before they come to this country.

Such frenzied work-arounds, however, might not work forever.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has begun rationing the garments in overseas markets as demand has skyrocketed.

Word is the Utah-based faith is now limiting members to two sets of each style at a time — if they can find them at all."

"He declined to comment on reasons for the regional rather than global rollout and why the church couldn’t have ramped up production of the sacred underclothing in its Beehive Clothing manufacturing sites — in Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico, the Philippines and two Utah locations — to meet the need from the get-go."
