The Metropolitan Museum of Art has mounted a massive show of all the Ancient Egyptian Gods and there are a lot of 'em. The following contains a few paraphrased notes in quotes from the review:

If there must be an afterlife I much prefer the ancient Egyptian version to the Mormon one or any of the other nebulous predominantly undefined "heavens" humans expect to find themselves in. Does anyone think they are not going to heaven?

So imaginative the ancient Egyptian afterlife! And, so animal centric which is the great draw for me. So far ahead of us the Egyptians were seeing animals as part of a whole rather than mindless dumb creatures with edible parts.

The divinity of the Egyptian gods and goddesses were a group with individual personalities and lots of quirks all running "the cosmic enterprise called Eternal Life" using their individual gifts. Like "the sky goddess Nut who swallowed the sun each night and gave birth to it each dawn." (I actually like this better than Science's explanation.) And why not have a falcon head?

Imagine upon your "passing" that you are "guided into the next realm by the equivalent of an emotional support animal, a jackal headed service dog, slender as a saluki, name Anubis. And he leads you into the presence of that most charismatic of all divinities, Osiris, the ruler of the After life."

No passwords. No embarrassing garb. No veil. And color, color, color. Enough with white! Give me Cecile B. DeMille. And you did get to take stuff with you. None of that "you can't take it with you" thinking for the Egyptians. No. Load up your sarcophagus with whatever you want.

How did Heaven get so dumbed down? This look back showcases the trajectory of civilization on Earth becoming more banal every day. I just want more from a God than anybody offers any more. Especially what Mormons offer nowadays. Eternal obedience. It was so much more enticing back when you got your own planet and could run wild with your creativity. Now Mormons are running from who they were with their tails between their legs. Well, tails might be an improvement. Peculiar at last!

Gods are just as disappointing as the humans who create them.

I suppose it's nice to have simple explanations for everything and stories about the human experience, but at least be creative and include animals!

“No embarrassing garb.”

I dunno, man. How ‘bout these hats:

I’m likely to never step foot in the U.S. again, let alone New York, but I would very much enjoy this other upcoming MET Exhibition:

Spectrum of Desire: Love, Sex, and Gender in the Middle Ages

Looks like a fun read! Adding to my book list.
Thanks!

All three are worth reading. Be sure to let me know if you do so we can discuss them :)
