"The elements are eternal ...."

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/93/33#33

However,

"A miniature Big Bang was created Sunday at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ....
...

"The particle accelerator at the CERN laboratory near Geneva smashed together lead atoms for the first time, to produce temperatures a million times hotter than those found at the heart of the sun.
...

"'This process took place in a safe, controlled environment, generating incredibly hot and dense sub-atomic fireballs with temperatures of over ten trillion degrees.'

"'At these temperatures even protons and neutrons, which make up the nuclei of atoms, melt -- resulting in a hot dense soup of quarks and gluons known as quark-gluon plasma.'
...

"Within the atom smasher's 16.8-mile tunnel, scientists are recreating on a miniature scale what happened within nano-seconds of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago [BEFORE THE ELEMENTS EXISTED] ...."

I was very bummed when they canceled that project several years ago. I'm happy to see some of these discoveries being made anyway!

You can donate unused CPU runtime on your computer. This program runs in the background and uses CPU time normally not used. I have never noticed any performance issues related to doing this.

Many scientific projects generate huge amounts of data that need to be analyzed. What you are doing by signing up for this is allowing your computer to download and analyze data while you're computer is not busy doing anything else. The analyzed data is uploaded back to the project.

First, go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and download and install the BOINC client software.

Second, select which projects you want to donate computer time to. A list of projects can be found here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php Personally I like SETI, Einstein, and LHC.

I use it to support SETI. ET ftw.

I would love to be around when we get the first image of (or first visit by?!?!?) ET. The chances that it will resemble anything human are remote. Such a revelation would "shoot to hell" the notion of any deity's creations being in its image!

Science has not been a friend to Mormonism thus far, and the future will only bring more cog dis to the educated, die-hard believer!

Elements decay all the time. That's what radiation is. Uranium decays into lead as it sheds protons, electrons and x-rays. Plutonium is made from uranium. Stars convert hydrogen into helium.

Elements are no more eternal than daisies. They change all the time. You don't need a supercollidor to know that.

True enough! There are many examples--in nature and in the laboratory--which show that the chemical elements can change into other ones and completely cease to exist as elements; the LHC is just one more nail in coffin of the 19th century concept of their supposed immutability (which Mormonism has adopted and canonized).

Who honestly believes an extra terrestrial civilization capable of coming here with obviously advanced technology would be using, or listening for, radio waves?

They should shut it down and put the money toward researching probably DNA/disease consequences for the human race with the increase in cosmic rays bombarding the earth (already 20%+ increase in one decade).
