The reason for tithing..

Tithing was introduced at the end of the 19th century because the Church was in debt because of the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. Prior to that people 'gave' to the Church through their time etc.

So why is it still required?

Why stop a good thing ? Well good for the management. Also wasn't it a percentage of ones SURPLUS -ones savings not ones gross income?
