A family friend I know gave me a bottle of wine for Christmas. Humorous conversation with the Mrs. tonight: "Is cabernet sauvignon a red wine or white wine?" Mrs: "Red." Then, I tried to open the bottle with a corkscrew, and a plastic piece fell down on the top. The Mrs. said, "I think that's a filter, for the tannins." I said, "I think it's part of the corkscrew." I said, "What are tannins?"

What did she think it was like filtered cigarettes? Tannins are what give red wines much of their character.

Well, you see, the Tannins are the unruly clan of antagonists seen in the Back to Future Trilogy--starting with Biff in 1955 with a penchant for messing up common colloquialisms, Griff with his Pit Bull hoverboard and extendable bat in 2015, and the wily old desperado, Buford "Mad Dog" Tannin, way back in the 1800's.

It's best to use caution with any booze. Drink only a little until you know how it affects you. If you taste it at home, at least you don't have to worry about car accidents, but you headaches are a possiblity so take it easy.

Try Sauvignon Blanc, it is the green grape that grows in the same region.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the dark Reds. Red wines run from light red such as Pinot noirs and riojas through the dark reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The tannins in wine come from the grape skins, and a wine with a lot of tannins in it dries out your tongue. It's one of those little pleasures that we wine drinkers enjoy.

I think the OP encapsulates the humor that can ensue when you start to learn about wines.

IMO Cabernet Sauvignon is the one wine for which you want to pay a bit more money. The cheaper Cabernets can be awful. You need a certain level of quality with a Cabernet.
