Since this goes against what the Church has been saying for years, how much do you think this gentleman is risking his career AND membership. Boyd K. Packer must be chomping at the bits to shut this guy up.

I actually think the church serves its purposes best by letting him be. They can point to him and show how willing they are to tolerate diverse opinions while at the same time holding fast to their official policy.

In the meantime, they get to watch how the church responds generally to this sort of controversy, allowing to prepare carefully for the inevitable day in which they reverse their policy and stop fighting against gay rights.

We all know is going to happen. This cult has a long pattern that isn't very very predictable.

He keeps his comments/opinions within the range of acceptable teachings. He seems to couch them in the "we don't know for sure, but, it appears that" category.
He is sharing some research that is not absolute.
So it works.
