I will be making a move to Reno sometime soon, depending on when my 88 year old TBM grandmother dies (she changed her/deceased grandpa's trust recently so my adult children and I will no longer have a place to live). I will be resigning from the LDS church at that time as well, with no forwarding address of course. I am not leaving before then due to financial restrictions that should be resolved soon, then I will go whether she has kicked it or not.

So, how is the "atmosphere" in Reno? Mishies a bother much? I will be living with my boyfriend who was raised Methodist, but is basically agnostic. If I tell any inquiring minds that we are living in sin, will they go away?

Just wondering how to handle Nevada Mo's as opposed to Utah Mo's.

P.S. The trust money is going to BYU Idaho and other Mo institutes of higher learning. I don't mind that, it's their money, but I DO mind essentially becoming homeless!

If where he lived is any indication of what you'll find, expect lots of wrinkled, old retired folks who don't care what you do.

You'll want to build yourself a good solid support system (particularly if you're resigning the church).

I lived near there 20 years ago, the only time I've really moved away from Utah since I was a kid...

I'd get bored, and the obvious entertainment was gambling, and I have nothing against gambling on moral grounds, but it is a waste of money (IMHO) because you can't win in the long run.

Another church--liberal, obviously--UU, book club, outdoor rec club, anything to fill the void...

It should be a nice change for you. You may want to take come classes at UNReno. It would be a good place to meet some people too. I don't know for sure but I think you wont' be bothered much by Mormons if you don't let others know where you are going and then they can't hunt you down. I think Vegas has 12 to 15 % mormons so Reno can't be more than that, I wouldn't think.

I lived in Reno from 1989 - 1992 and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. There was plenty of things to do, plenty of things to see, and plenty of places to go. Lake Tahoe is just up the hill and the Bay Area not too far away.

I found the people to be nice, and I even enjoyed the church folks. I remember the first meeting I had with the Bishop when I moved into the ward. He actually asked me if I wanted home teachers. I told him I never knew it was an option. He told me that if I didn't want any he wouldn't waste my time or theirs. I remember thinking "This is great!!'. I told him we didn't need home teachers so none were assigned to bother me. Another time, on Super Bowl Sunday, he announced in church that he felt "inspired" that the third hour of church that day be canceled in order for us to "spend more time with our families". Again...it was great!!

A lot of Jehovah's Witnesses live there. Say hello to my wife's family. She can't, because they shun her for leaving "the truth".

I testify in the name of the FSM that Reno is better. It has whorehouses, bars, X rated movies, and better BBQ.

It's not "whorehouse" it's "Legalized Prostitution."

And no, I'm not going to spank you - you'd enjoy it too much.

I left Utah cause I just couldnt handle the mormon BS anymore. I went into "shock" at how the real world was and what I missed. The best thing about Utah was twofold...seeing it in my rearview mirror as I gave it the "bird", AND the interstate that leads out of it!! I did go into real world shock when I got back to the real world...I couldnt believe the freedom that I had, and I could finally drink and smoke in peace! No need to hide it anymore...funny tho' how I smoked alot more when I was in UT. It will take you a while to readjust at the freedoms you will soon realize that TSCC took away from you. For me, I didn't want to close my eyes or sleep, there was way too much stuff I wanted to do!! Its been about 2 years for me since moving and leaving TSCC, but I don't regret my decision at all!!! That was the happiest day of my life. When I left the morg and UT for good. Best wishes on your move, and know that others have taken the same walk that you have. It may be scary at first, but 'Everything is difficult at first, then it becomes easy'.

i lived in utah for 6 years and live in reno now, the mo's are not so in your face like ut. skiing just as good and mt. rose is only 30 min. away and you can get any and all alcoholic drinks you want, no state run liquor stores or private clubs [ or did ut. change the laws] , no state income tax, weather similar to ut. nevada is also a medical marijuana state, it's a casino, tourist based economy, you have week long events like hot august nights [cars] street vibrations [motorcycles] rib cook off [bbq] lake tahoe is 45 min. away, legal brothels 30 min. away [ the talent is better than i thought it would be] also at the present time housing is very affordable, i think you would find it enjoyable

Big bar scene there, if you are up for it, try the 'Santa Crawl', definitely something you won't find in Zion.

I would move to Reno in a heartbeat if given the chance.

I used to go there for business pretty regularly. I love it. The people are great, and you can do whatever you want.

I love reno/sparks/carson/tahoe.

It is better in every way than utah:

-No income tax
-Prettier
-Warmer winters
-Cooler summers
-Better mountains
-Fewer people
-Better entertainment
-Open 7 days/week, and 24/hours per day
-Closer to CA
-Nice balance of political views
-Church people don't run it...even Harry Reid is a different type of politician than Orrin Hatch, et al.
-Less smog
-Karaoke...

In Utah, there are ass holes in Bars. In Nevada, cool people go to bars. You can find bad spots, but here, going out for a drink is a perfectly respectable activity. Very cool.

I have been to Reno many times. Have close friends there. I always enjoy it there. Always good casino shows to go to,,Tahoe not far away,,good food,,laid back people there. Beer is always cold,,large servings and cheap.

My sweetie and I don't drink, smoke, or gamble, but he loves it there. The air races, Hot August Nights, Lake Tahoe, the rib cook-off, the talent, especially 80's music. I have only been there once, in February, and I LOVED it. Lake Tahoe is wonderful, I can't wait to go there in the summer!

I can hardly wait now, and I will be giving Utah the bird as I leave too!

Thanks Again, ~soon to be an EX Utard!

Kim
