A few years ago, someone gave me, as a gift, a certificate that a star had been named in my honor. Perhaps some of you also had stars named in your honor.

Question is - how can we find out where these stars are and if they are anywhere near a star called Kolob? Wouldn't that be something?

The very second I saw this topic's headline, and your profile name, in the topics list, my first thought was:

Hey, that's right!
Twinker, Twinker, little star,
How I wonder what you are.

sorry to say, anyone can set up an organisation and say they will name a star after you. It's a 'kinda' scam, and you're really just paying for a nice certificate.
anyone with some fancy paper and a good printer could start up their own company - "Kandi's hairdressing salon and astronomical star naming service" - and it would have as much weight as any of the other star naming services
There is no commonly agreed register(s) for these, and they are not recognised by any serious astronomical society.

The ones I am aware of, usually give a location for the star and some details about it (magnitude, distance, appearance, etc)

Congratulations Twinker, someone who thought highly of you wanted to name a piece of the universe after you. That itself is an awesome gift.

I'm still waiting for all my memories of mormonism to be lost...

...like tears in the rain.

One, you can see it without the hubble space telescope.
Two, it shows up on google sky map.
