As I understand it and I haven't heard Monson or any GAs speak since the 60s, he is always bragging about all the nice things he does for widows. He must not have time for anything else.

Like someone who's created these stories with an end in mind. If you look at the ages of the top 15 when they became apostles, Monson was 9 years younger than his next nearest competitor. That tells me he's extremely ambitious.

Monson's persona is so smarmy, so fake, and we saw how he really acts when the news crew caught him in the shoe shine chair. How anyone looks at him and sees anything other than a creepy con man, I don't know. He really makes my skin crawl. I don't believe a word he says.

This is a situation that we don't see today: a young bishop of a Utah Ward full of probably 20-30 something widows whose husbands were killed in WW2. I'm still not sure how that happened that they were all in the same Ward.
This seems to be fodder for his many stories which is often misinterpreted because of a lack of information, and opens it up for speculation.
The believers would take the position that this all proper and on the up and up. Righteousness at it's best. Those with a little bit of a skeptical eye might not be so easily convinced.
I was about to make that point too. Right after WWII there would have been plenty of luscious 20-something widows in his ward. Just the fact there were 85 widows belies the fact that they were all old. Have you ever been in a regular family ward that had that many widows...unless it was in a retirement community or took in a couple of rest homes?
He is usually referring to his stay in the old ward that used to be on sixth south and west temple. I attended there in the late seventies. One sunday morn he showed up unannounced during sac mtg. Of course, they let him speak. He AGAIN told about the widows he took care of in that area. Some were still friends with him. That entire area back then was nothing but widows and people on church welfare. Several generations of family members that had been on welfare forever. Those people worshipped him even back then!!!!
So Maggie, would you say he was going above and beyond his duties as bishop, or that he was just over exaggerating to impress people and pat himself on the back. 85 widows seems like an awful lot...
I think 85 widows is probably pretty accurate. There had to have been at least 50 when I was there every sunday. As far as patting himself on the back.... probably. Just like I used to do when I was active. When your whole self image revolves around your performance for the cult, you bet a pat on the back as often as possible is necessary.
He probably did visit widows although the number may be exaggerated. The problem is his bragging about it all the time. What ever happened to 'let not your right hand know what your left hand doeth? You are supposed to do good in secret, not broadcast your good deeds to the world.
