Urim and Thummim Definition

"The Prophet also had a seer stone which was separate and distinct from the Urim and Thummim"

"...the seer stone which was in possession of the Prophet Joseph Smith in early days"

Mormon Doctrine, p. 819

No discussion of head in the hat method or how he acquired the stone. I know the church has spoken of this in the Ensign (and of course we have Rough Stone Rolling), but I wonder -- how did Bruce R. McConkie tackle this internally? Did he ever speak publicly about Joseph's peep stone? Anyone know?

This is one of those tidbits of mormondom that make me chuckle. The official Mo historians seem loathe to admit that Joseph "translated" (barf) using a peep stone in a hat, but magical spectacles attached to a breast plate are proudly presented as a reasonable translation device.
