I haven't been on this board in about a year. I popped in for a visit and what do I see in one of the threads? A reference to the "infamous England East Mission" in a comment made by “Skeptic”. Skeptic suggests goggling "England East Mission" for some interesting reading. I must plead guilty to having authored some of that "interesting" reading a few years back including a piece entitled, "The England East Mission, Stolen Cars, and Tangier North Africa" which first appeared on this board, as well as another entitled, “The Elephant in the Room”.

I use to be an active participant on this board a decade ago. I formally resigned from the Mormon Church in 2006 and have reached the point where I hardly think about the issues articulated on this board anymore. I have moved on.

Former Mormon friends sometimes ask about my departure from the Mormon Church. My answer is generally always the same. I say, " I cared enough about the religion of my birth to learn the history and theology underpinning that religion and it was the undoing of my belief.” In so responding, I am saying to that person between the lines, “And if you had cared as much as I did, you would also find yourself in the same position.”

Nice one-liner. My husband and I were new to the board last summer. We have a fondness for England. We have traveled there, and our son returned from his mission to Leeds nearly a year ago. I appreciate your succinct reply to that ever present question.

I occasionally mention the old England East Mission on here. For those here who think that James is overstating things in his former posts, he is not.... if anything, he is understating things.

Oh, and I remember meeting the Greasemonkey in London. He was the only person who I knew who could tune up a Ford Escort using only a screwdriver.

I too remember the greasemonkey, in fact, he was in my first area and left that area to go home. He was an interesting fellow. Once said to me: "DeWitt, you're a wart on the ass of progress." I liked the guy. Hello to all my old England East friends and others..... ;-)

I lived in the England East mission for many years. I dont remember it being very exciting!

Oh dear !ignore my previous post I just remembered the belnap era! I was baptised in Grays branch in 1975. Post belnap but lots of stories about strange british israel like beliefs. I think he was a doctor and wrote books for boys and girls about sex! I think he also made the elders work strange and long hours!

Is the OP referring the infamous East London Mission? I served in the London Mission (Hyde Park) and heard a lot of crazy things about that mission before the shut'er down.

I served from 74-76. I must of missed all the excitement there. I never met Pres. Belnap, but did meet his grandson serving there. My mission Pres. Myln D. Smith. He actually married and sealed my wife and I in the Mesa Temple. My companions were Elders: Fussell, Miner, Clark, & etc.
I've always wanted to back there, but that is now over 40 years ago. I saw in Utah an England East reunion once when I was there for Conference. I went there and didn't know a single person. It was about 10 years after I returned home. I wouldn't mind hearing from people. randyjay55@hotmail.com
