Richard Pacham has a current thread on LDS Haitian relief efforts compared to what other churches are doing. See:
http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,81163Here is a longish SLTrib article from earlier this week about what sounds to me like a charity Ponzi scheme - early loans are partially paid back out of proceeds from bigger new loans.
It is not specifically sponsored by LDS Inc, but it is run by relatively high mucky-mucks in LDS Inc. Studdert was chief of staff for Pres Reagan, pres and CEO of Fonix, a speech processing company with a troubled history, head of the Utah Centennial Commission. He got in trouble there when a black minister complained that there was insufficient minority inclusion into the Utah centennial celebration, and Studdert said "Some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope". Making a lynching wisecrack in response to a comment from a black minister was not the best move in the world. Some of you may remember that brouhaha.
In the current Haitian debacle, Russell M Nelson's name is associated with the endeavor. Ouch for LDS Inc. Read the article and see if it doesn't feel like the stereotypical Utah affinity-scam. At best, it was a plan gone wildly wrong.
