Okay, sometimes I do sit and listen to conference talks for entertainment. I was listening to Bednar and of course most of what he said was designed to elicit guilt, keep the members in line and really showed a narrow mindset. He is wound so tight.

Anyway, for being such an educated guy, like all the other GAs he knows nothing about biblical scholarship or biblical languages - maybe he has chosen to remain ignorant as part of the compartmentalization process in the brain that TBMs frequently do.

In his talk he mentions that the Devil (Lucifer is the name he used) wants us to be miserable. I thought, really David Bednar? You don't know about the origin of the word Lucifer?

http://mexc.blogspot.com/2006/01/does-word-lucifer-refer-to-satan.html

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Two thoughts. One: It isn't Lucifer who wants us to be miserable. It is Dave Bednar.

(Help me out here. The name Lucifer is unusual,to say the least. I know the theory that it has something to do with the planet Venus, but does it also on a deeper level invoke the story of Prometheus, whose goal in life was to free humanity from thralldom to their gods, in his case by bringing them the secret of fire? Is that partly the background of the name Lucifer, which means "light-bearer"? It seems to me that the story of Prometheus/Lucifer is the key to spiritual awakening, if you see it as a metaphor for striking out on your own and discovering all by yourself who you really are inside. No wonder that the existing gods hate you more than anybody else in the cosmos.

My second point: I knew Dave Bednar years ago when he was in grad school. One of his dreams for the church was to have it reach the stage where fathers would be recognized as the proper middlemen to report to the bishop on extent of their sons' masturbation. I kid you not.

The devil being named lucifer has been established in TSCC for quite some time. I am 34 and remember being taught that as a child. I think good old Joe had something to do with that idea.

Satan.... Lucifer..... The Devil......

I think he should be called Beelzebub. Has more of a devilish ring to it, like someone who's up to no good.

Either way, if one refers to Lucifer/Beelzebub/Satan/etc as one who fights against the kingdom of God (ie Mormon Church) then I am proud to count myself as one of his followers. I am also happy to report that I am, actually, quite happy, and not miserable at all (except in the parts of my life that still interact with TSCC)

But if you leave TSCC and are happier TBMs will say STAn is deceiving you

It's my understanding that LDS teachings say that Lucifer is Satan in the pre-existance - it is a word used for anyone who goes against the Lord's plan which Heavenly Father chose, allowing for the agency of mankind.

This is not an uncommon teaching in Christianity. Mormonism puts a little different twist on it but it's the same basic principle.

Satan has many names, but the job assigned to him remains pretty much the same across the board.

I find it to be a fear tactic and one I don't subscribe to.

Funny how "the most correct book" didn't pick up on the original Hebrew word when it copied from Isaiah.

The Eerdmans Bible Dictionary 1987 page 267 (heading Daystar, no listing of Lucifer)

"Another name for the morning star (cf. 2 Pet. 1:19; Rev. 2:28) or the planet Venus, which appears in the sky before the sun. At Isa. 14:12 the babylonian ruler is compared to a "Day star" (NIV "morning star"), which has fallen from heaven and has been felled like a stately tree. Though the Church Fathers associated this verse with the fall of Satan from heaven (cf. KJV "Lucifer"), it actually speaks of the end of tyranny rather than a prelude to it, as with Satan who after the fall still retained much power. Some commentators link this idea with an ancient myth about the banishment of a divine person from heaven.

The New Testament, which contains Jesus' remark about the fall of Satan (Luke 10:18), does not identify Lucifer with Satan. Instead, the author of 2 Peter suggest that the morning star" (Gk. Phosphoros "light bearer") refers to Christ's second coming, while the aged John possibly alludes to Christ, who will support the church at Thyatira (Rev. 2:28, Gk. Aster proinos; cf 22:16)."

The church portrayal is ignorant of actual occult teaching which is surprising since the fraud Joe Smith was hip deep on the occult. There is a hierarchy of demons, they aren't simply names for "the devil". Of course it's all bs but at least get the fairy tales straight.

Bednar is stuck with this misuse of the word "Lucifer," because
he's a Mormon GA. It's in the BOM and also in the Endowment
ceremony, so he can't deal with it in a realistic way.

Lucifer, aka Satan, aka the Devil, etc., is clearly in charge of TSCC. I even told the SP and his counselors this. Amen.

We must remember that there are probably no endowed members who don't belong to Satan! Has anyone NOT broken a single commandment? Aha! All belong to Satan's church.

BTW, it can be interpreted that the Evening or Morning Star represent not Satan, but Christ. He came to earth.

Lucifer-Prometheus both pissed off the gods in charge at their times. Us huddled masses don't need knowledge, just faith.
