It's a good catchword for something important left to a person or a group by their forebearers, so in the mormon case it's supposed to be a double goody, because of the handcart pioneers and the like, who were inspired by god--so I think they claim it as a legacy ultimately given to them by & from god.
Who knows how much $$ LD$inc. spent on creating the movie, "Legacy." Initially it showed at the Joseph Smith Building's Theater (the old Hotel Utah) and its creators were told by Gordon B. Hinckley that he wanted everyone "crying" at the end. I also recall it being practically mandatory to view it when it was announced church-wide to be shown a special showing at all stake centers with the big satellite dishes.
The church spent the BUCK$ to market it for years, so I would think that borrowing the "legacy" name is somehow taking advantage of a perceived good thing or brand recognition? (That is for the Utah folk only.)
It's funny that the lead girl in Legacy, Kathleen Beller, was also in movies where she was nude before the church hired her for the movie. I guess they wanted a girl who could really make you feel the spirit!
BTW, among other things the Legacy movie was deliberately intended to put a stop to rumblings at the time about women being admitted to the Priesthood. One scene showed an episode in which the pioneers' oxen got sick. In the original (i.e., verifiable, documented historical reality) some of the women laid their hands on the oxens' heads and gave them Priesthood blessings. In the movie they all gathered around in a circle and said a prayer.
I kid you not.
