Just a reminder that last-minute tickets for dinner and Tal Bachman's talk will probably not be available if not ordered ahead. We order a few extras when we give the count to the hotel, but they are usually gone by Friday evening.

Of course, we want you to come for the whole conference, but if you wanted to come just for this, you should write to Kathleen at kathjones@gmail.com -- she can then send you an invoice from PayPal. If you want to use a check, that must arrive at our Treasurer's mail box by Monday, Oct. 11th. (This is the deadline for checks for anything regarding the conference). Mailing information on the conference page of our website.

In adition, we are offering Jeff Sharlet's talk to the public. This is the announcement of that -- sent out to public list, blogs, free-thinking groups, etc. His information is critical for those worried about church vs. state issues.

>This year, at the annual Exmormon Foundation Conference (Oct.15-17), we are hosting a nationally known author, Jeff Sharlet, who is speaking about two books he's written regarding an extreme and very secretive Fundamentalistgroup he believes is a real threat to American Democracy. His first book, and best-seller, was "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power (quite an eye-opener, extremely well researched). His second book just released is "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy". You may have seen him in the last year being interviewed on several national news shows. the church vs. state issues that Jeff covers in these books is a growing interest for exmo's, especially those in Utah. And there is growing evidence that some very capable Mormons are getting involved in the more radical, "theocray-agenda" fundamentalis. Here is a short version of his bio:

Jeff Sharlet is an American journalist and author best known for writing about religious subcultures in the United States. He is the author of “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power” (Harper, 2008), a national best selling narrative history; and a new book just published: “C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy”. Jeff has been interviewed many times on national news shows. He is also a contributing editor for Harper’s and Rolling Stone and his work has appeared in The Washington Post, Mother Jones, New York, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Columbia Journalism Review, among others. Jeff has a new position at Dartmouth College, teaching Creative Nonfiction

He will be speaking on Saturday afternoon, October 16th at 2 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20.<

Hope some of you can who aren't attending the full conference can come to some of these sessions!

Sue
