I was walking home from work last Sunday, turned the corner down my street and heard church hymns playing so loud I could hear it from two blocks away. I looked down the street and saw where it was coming from--some kind of bbq block party on somebody's front lawn.

I just stood there in the middle of the street just wanting to disappear out of this place.

Wonder if the music was to prove their party honored the Sabbath.

That's to ease any guilt feelings arising from breaking the Sabbath.

It could make a difference. Was the music blasting off of a Deseret book CD or was it a Bluegrass band playing live?

They were the same Mormon hymns I fell asleep to in sacrament.

Ugh. I took a break from work one day and drove to the parking lot of this restaurant where there was a bench under cover (shade). It was just before Christmas. I was quietly minding my own business, smoking a cigarette and reading my book. A group of people walked out of the parking lot and stood there, in front of this restaurant (feet from me), singing Christmas hymns as loudly as they could. I thought it was horribly rude because I was obviously reading and how could they think that wasn't disturbing me? Because the Jesus is so awesome, singing about him should never, ever be disturbing to anyone, even if they are Jewish or Muslim, or Buddhist, or Hindu, or Pagan or Atheist. EVERYONE loves hearing Jesus hymns, right?

Finally, I realized I was outnumbered, so I snapped my book closed, gave them all a withering eyeroll and headed back to my car, thinking "so much for my quiet, peaceful break." As I was walking to the car, one woman shouted at my back, "We're sorry! Were we disturbing you?" Too little too late. I didn't want to be the asshole who admitted that churchy Jesusy Christmas carols were annoying. I just got in the car and drove off.

I bet they were about to sacrifice a young person to two years of indentured servitude.

These stories remind of when I slept on the couch while visiting actor friends many years ago, and at about 5:30 a.m. the apartment next door exploded with hymns and chanting that verrrry creepily segued one into the other with no breaks, sung & chanted by maybe a dozen people & a couple of kids. As I noted, these friends were actors, who like to sleep late, and after I lay there amazed at the weirdness from the next apartment, one of the good looking actress-babe friends came down the stairs banging on the wall as loud as she could--a minute later there's a knock on the door and a somber man in a black suit asks: "Are we disturbing you?"

At 5 frikkin' ay-em in the morning you idiot!? A cult-y sounding church meeting in a frikkin' apartment!?!?

I would not be surprised if the group was a church choir, for instance, and hymns were used for music for their block party, or whatever it was.

Everyone chooses what kind of music they prefer.

Clearly, that's over the top and rude!
