Opposition to slavery caused persecution?

They wish! Did you catch Quentin Cook's claim that the reason for mob violence against the early Mormons was their opposition to slavery?

That's a new one. I thought they had mobs go up against them due to Joe Smith's polygamous affairs and his eventual trashing of the local printing press. Nice spin doctoring!

(I thought someone on this board did some research and discovered that LDS Inc. was actually not against slavery... but that Smith was an opportunist.)

Slavery was an issue in Missouri although not the only one. Missouri was a slave state and this was just a few years before the Civil War. Mormons didn't generally own slaves and many were Northerners. The fact that they voted as a block made them a threat in the perception of slaveholders. However, the other issues that you mentioned also played a later part as did other things, but that was in Illinois.Polygamy wasn't that well know at the Missouri period and they hadn't yet destroyed a printing press. However, they were standoffish and kept apart. That too played a role.

That's why ol' Brigham owned slaves and Utah was a slave territory.

More likely it was consecrating the "gentiles" property

After the Book of Comandments was published a bunch of people got jhold of the revelations and discovered that the mormons were planning on taking the land for themselves.

Bad idea.
