It occurs to me that even if the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City stands through the "millennium" (which it has already failed to do, having been completely dismantled as of this writing), it still won't be as old as Hagia Sophia is now. I'm just saying.

WTF? Did Nelson die? Why does he have a grave marker already set up? And with supplies lifted from work. That whole Mormon world is so weird. You are not "nobody," silly Susan. :) Yeah, I was blown away when you told me about the temple "renovation." Like it's a Long John Silver's that they're tearing down and rebuilding to code. Actually, I think Shakjula told me about the

What the hell?? I didn't hear that they did this until just the other day. Nobody ever tells me anything. I was kind of horrified by the pictures: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/temple-square-renovation-update--december-2021 Let's hope the reconstruction goes better than the Baphuon monument in Cambodia. And yeah, I suspect that all the magical symbols on the side of th

I don't know much about the Jello Belt, but I drive past the Mormon temple in Carmel, Indiana every day, and it's in use, but I wouldn't say it's busy. I've never seen more than about 15 cars in front of it, and I have no idea how many workers are there. The Carmel temple is not a "McTemple." It's a medium-sized one and quite ornate inside with a lot of hand-painted decorations and mura

I received the endowment in the Chicago temple in 1987 back when they were still doing the blood oaths and naked touching. It wasn't a pleasant experience for me. I was sealed to my parents in the Washington DC temple in about 1977. We lived across the street from it. I remember seeing the hats and aprons. They told us not to laugh when we saw them. There were no windows, and my siblings and I wa

The one here in Indiana looks like a huge iconic phallus. http://youarecurrent.com/2015/01/13/new-mormon-temple-could-draw-crowds-to-carmel/

My friend and I were driving past the temple, and she made some comment about it. I looked over and said "That doesn't look like anything to me." (We're both huge Westworld fans, and I was relieved she got my joke.) My son and I have driven past it with TBM family, and we hijack the conversation away from them by expressing unusual interest with the empty field across the street from

Best of luck. I've found the Mormon church to be absolutely toxic in every way. If you think it's possible or even desirable to engage with these people, then I wish you well.

My sister-in-law from Utah has a normal name but with an unusual spelling. It's spelled "Tami," which makes me think Nephi, Lehi, Jedi... but it's pronounced "Tammy." A little better than the usual LaVoy, DeVaughn, LaFrysauce, I guess.

I flipped off a Mormon temple a few months ago. It was the first time I ever did that, and I was surprised by it. I wasn't getting along with Mormon family members, and I was sad about how the Mormon church has destroyed the relationships in my family. So, I gave them a long, drive-by FUCK. YOU. BTW, I have seen someone else do that once. So, evidently it's not an uncommon sentiment.

When I worked in downtown Minneapolis, I used to see a group of guys from my ward sitting in the corner of a sandwich shop on the Skyway. They would have their heads down chatting amongst themselves like they were afraid of the whole world. That's how I remember them. I used to walk up and say "Hey guys! When's the revolution?"

I can't remember if they used to do this years ago when I was one with the body of Landru, but I've noticed among my Mormon family that there is a heavy emphasis placed on the careers of other Mormons (whom I never actually meet).. I hear about how this or that Mormon is a lawyer or an anesthesiologist or a physicist or something like that. It's like they're suggesting that either Mormonism is fo

I loved Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. He is such a good writer. What a funny reference! Janet Asimov, Isaac's widow, has Mormon extended family, and she has written about her experiences dealing with them. It's a familiar annoyance. https://thehumanist.com/commentary/gripes-and-groans-religion-entertainment-and-a-culture-of-disposability

It didn't even occur to me that it might be an MLM party. I just assumed it was some sort of fake friendship overture to hook me back into Mormonism. Argh.

"Do you want to come to a chocolate party? It's at the Shlabotnik's house! He's an attorney." "Is it an attorney chocolate party?" "No, it's with some people from the church." "Then no." After all the trouble I've had with the Mormon church, these things always sound to me like: "Hey, your rapist is throwing a frat party! Do you want to com

I've been thinking for days about what you said about insecurity. That's really the root of it all, isn't it? They feel insecure about themselves, so they join an organization that arms them with an answer for everything. Then the same organization creates a standard of perfection that they can't possibly meet, so they become more insecure. It's a cycle. It's why they can't think for themselves

I'm not going to listen to that, but I imagine he probably does get an icy reception from people who are disgusted by his church's general lack of concern for the hurt they cause and their subsequent denials.

I discovered Star Trek: Enterprise on Netflix a few years ago, and I thought it was the best Trek series since the original, though tragically cut short. I have read all the Enterprise novels since then, hoping to get some closure on the characters, but they don't go in a direction I would have liked.

Yes, the complete lack of concern for what's right and wrong. They carry the torch for all the Mormon church's fake moral issues, like swearing, tattoos, coffee, and whatever bullshit they're on about at the moment, but they couldn't care less about their own church-encouraged behavior that actually hurts people, and they make childish denials when they're confronted with it. I don't have time fo

No, you misunderstand me. I don't give a shit about the Mormon church or its clannish subculture in the flyover state in which it resides. In my opinion, Mormonism is really just about winning arguments and being right. So, it's members go around trolling other people with ridiculous statements and denying very obvious facts. It comes off as childish and dumb. What I'm saying is that I don't w

I had a rather discouraging conversation with a member of my family yesterday. He claimed that the Mormon church is being persecuted for their anti-gay policies. I laughed out loud at that and reminded him of a number of the things the Mormon church had done over the years to earn the disgust of the wider world who don't share their bigotry against LGBT people. He made a number of very childish d

I think it would be neat to own a copy of the Silmarillion in a pocket-sized edition with supple leather cover and onion skin pages. Maybe a triple combination with the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion in one book. I would carry it everywhere.

I attended my niece's high school commencement yesterday, and I was very proud of her. She is special needs but worked very hard and got her high school diploma. It was a very large graduating class, and I was standing outside waiting to get in with my Mormon parents. Somebody from their church came by, and I was introduced to him. They talked for awhile, and then they started talking trash about
