Oh absolutely. I went on a mission 30 years ago and my missionary president as much as admitted that. He said an investigator may or may not join and may or may not stay active but missionary has already invested enough of themselves by going on a mission in the 1st place that they are the ones that mattered. Plenty of missionaries that should have been sent home, that were not working, had good

Yeah I think it was either a power trip by your Bishop or by the president of the Provo temple. I never heard of that before. A friend of mine from the Sacramento area got married in the Manti temple, another friend "eloped" to the Hawaii temple, and more recently my nephew got married in the San Diego temple, even though neither of them were from the area, because his wife wanted to be

I knew him years ago at BYU. He was a good guy then. What a shame that Mormonism has gone to his head in the worst way

Im a journalist. I have plenty of people who will give honest feedback, including the friend who suggested I broaden my reading horizon. I tale your point and it is an excellent one, but I also feel the more sources, the better.

A friend of mine challenged me to read 2 books this year written by people whose I philosophy I disagree with. He said it would help me develop my critical thinking skills (something people are not encouraged to develop in Mormonism.) So I am looking for ideas. What books do you suggest I read?

Ken is just a guest host. I think they are going to invite several guest hosts and see who tests best with the audience.

I've gotten "attacked" for my opinion a couple of times but honestly, it has always made me think, reasses and sometimes research my position. I haven't always changed my mind but when I haven't, it has given me a chance to clarify my opinion. That being said, 97 percent of the time people have been extremely helpful, kind and supportive. The other 3 percent of the time, they make

I think you are presuming a lot. First, that you have to derive your morals from the idea there is a God to reward you or punish you. Second, that because the Mormon idea of God turned out to be a bunch of lies everyone on this board has given up on the idea of God altogether. I refuse to let Mormons and their crap define God and their mistakes color my views forever.

I wonder if they realize how creepy they sound when they start their posts with "Our prophet has asked us ..." Which at least half my Mormon Facebook friends have done. It sounds so cult-like.

No more than a bad marriage should put you off ever loving anyone again. It can teach you things, make you cautious, teach you about relationships but it shouldn't destroy your ability to love. Believing an abusive spouse's lies and thinking all relationships are not better than your abuser provided means they win. They have taken something from you and you let them. An abusive church is the same

Love this. Exactly right: "Some are so desperate to believe this a hoax for their own selfish reasons cuz they just don't wanna take precautions and love to pretend that the rest of us are over-reacting."

I didn't think she had any place at the governor's press conference. Way out of order. Several people have organized volunteer efforts in Utah equal or better than hers - she was only included because of the Mormon element.

I heard someone yammering in the grocery store about how the church calling home the missionaries is a fulfillment of prophecy and confirms we are in the last days. As in, right before Jesus comes again his missionaries will be called home. Typical Mormon ignorance and then some, since Mormon doctrine claims a number of things have to happen before the missionaries are ALL called home, many of

The water thing has me puzzled too - for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Seriously - why? But what really makes me mad is people buying out the stores of hand sanitizer, Lysol etc - far more than they could possibly use. My son's gf works at Target and she said someone came in and bought gallons of hand sanitizer, dozens of containers of disinfecting wipes and other items, basically filling he

They are wrong. My sister-in-law adopted two children when she was in her 40s and single. She lives in Utah (in a small town even) and there was absolutely no problem with the church at all. Her ward was very supportive and she never faced any discipline nor even got a talking to from her bishop. If they say your daughter is not allowed to adopt, they are misinformed.

I have a very good friend who is finally starting to think critically about the church. Their biggest doubts are with the Book of Mormon. I'd like to be well-versed in Book of Mormon problems, since my first doubts all surrounded the First Vision. Everyone has their own tipping point. But, if asked by this friend, I'd like to know more about the problems specifically with the Book of Mormon. Conv

It is also funny they wait around so eagerly to be told what they can and cannot do, instead of governing their lives like real grown ups.

Almost every Mormon in the SLC area has been repeating the rumor that at Conference there will be announcements that missions will be different lengths and you can choose how long you want to serve AND that tea and coffee will be removed from the word of wisdom. Even a very well connected member I know is swearing to this. So it seems like, if you want to hold on to your members, you should li

I grew up in Paradise in the 70s and 80s. Back in those days, there were 4 wards in a town of 27,000. In recent years, for a number of reasons, the number of wards was decreased to 3, and then 2. There are two church buildings, one burned down - the other is still standing. Years ago, the Mormons were more influential in that area, now they are declining in numbers like everywhere. That being

I never heard that, Cheryl and I lived there my whole life. It's called "the Ridge" because it's built over several canyons and ridges.
