Hi all and warm greetings from London! I don’t post much on RfM these days but I’m immensely appreciative of the help, support and laughter I have invariably found here in the 13 years since I left the church. The reason I’m posting today is that I’ll be in NYC on 5th to 10th October and I wondered if there were any exmo meet ups scheduled... or if anyone fancied a coffee whilst I

Loved the book of Jurassic Park, read it just before the film came out. In fact, now that I think about it, I think I'll read it again; am just getting to the end of my current book. :)

That is exactly how I would have viewed the essays when I was TBM. Scary.

Thanks Tom. I kept the letter initially because it meant a great deal to me that he had responded. As a TBM I could see no wrong in him, or the church, despite evidence to the contrary staring me in the face. It was many years later that my doubts began. I came across the letter again recently when sorting through some personal papers. Thank you Steve for your interesting treatment of

I'm not suggesting this is the full reason for the essays but I definitely think Tom Phillips' court case spooked them.

Pavlov's dogs. I recall a time when I attended church with a TBM friend I was visiting for the weekend. I sat in church getting physjcal warm fuzzies, whilst at the same time thinking what a load of rubbish. It occured to me that when I heard the familiar phrases (trigger words) my body reacted by producing the same physical sensations I'd previously associated with 'the spirit'. It was a very i

I'm seriously considering making one this year, and will cover it with the customary marzipan and royal icing. Although I'll probably be the only one to eat it.

I havn't been to SLC many times but I was there in August and thought it had a great vibe, I really enjoyed it. I met some fantastic people, none of whom were LDS. Might sound strange but it had a San Fransisco feel to it; as in it felt arty, happening, fun and a great place to meet great people. One of my favourite places was the Oasis Cafe, I had brunch there one time and loved it, only wi

I'd be hesitant to use the word gay until he does, it may feel safer to him to stick with SSA right now. I think I'd be inclined to go at his pace. By coincidence I'm writing this whilst staying at the home of one of my best friends and his partner. This friend and I met here in the UK through RfM (for that I will forever be grateful to RfM). He knew before his mission he was gay, he tr

When I received an email from my ex-husband's bishop, asking for my comments, I replied in a similar vein. I emailed something along the lines of "I no longer believe in the Mormon church and this has nothing to do with me. I wish XXXX and XXXX well". In reality I'd had a huge and conflicted emotional reaction to the email, which came out of the blue with no prior warning, but I f

One of my missionary companions (England Leeds Mission 85-86) was told in her Patriarchal Blessing that she would still be alive at the time of the second coming, that she literally would not die before it happened. I often wonder what her husband and children will think when she dies and the second coming won't have happened.

I asked the same question when I left the church. I had been so used to praying about problems or decisions in my life that, without the church and the resulting belief system, I felt abandoned, alone and insecure. First off I came to realise that although I had believed I was praying to god, I had in fact been talking to myself. And it really helped. 'Praying', or in truth talking to myself

I laughed and smiled all the way through, the first time I saw it, and cried practically all the way home. It brought up painful and angry emotions I had about the church that I thought were resolved. In particular it took me right back to my mission when I had that same innocent/naive outlook the elders in the show have. And it made me so angry that the church still does that to people. I have

Thank you, have put it on my Kindle now. Was browsing for other free Kindle books, don't think I'll be getting this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ensign-Church-Christ-Latter-day-Saints-ebook/dp/B00GI1Z1KY/ref=sr_1_42?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1409344450&sr=1-42&keywords=free+kindle+books Didn't know you could get Ensigns on Kindle but, then again, there were no Kindles in

This is the first year I've really liked the UK song. The rest of Europe doesn't like us very much so it will be interesting to see if we get many votes. :o) I love the Eurovision Song Contest, it's so bad it's good!!

I was 9 when the Osmonds were in their hey day in the UK and I was completely bowled over by them. Their PR for the church was v clever and I bought it hook line and sinker. I was an only child from a poor family and their lives, and the church, looked like a magical wonderland to me. Sod's law, when I started secondary school, there was a mormon boy in my class and I begged him to let me g
