The US Census taken in 1940 has just been released - 72 years after it was taken. The records are grouped by geographic location of where people lived at the time. Once the records are made public, a lot of work is needed to index the files so that family researchers can search out their relatives by name. Without indexing, you would have to know the address of your family members during the 1

I was a new convert in 1979. The ERA movement was absolutely a topic of discussion at church. I knew that the Mormons were against this amendment. I don't know that we ever heard anything "from the pulpit". But it was a major issue at the time and we were supposed to be against it. Sonia Johnson was notorious for standing up FOR the amendment. Also she was notoriously excommunicat

My mother taught me the easy way to know if I was using the correct pronoun. Remove the other person from the phrase and see how it sounds. My mother and I went to the store --- I went to the store. Dad took my sister and me out to dinner --- Dad took me out to dinner. PS - I loved the cartoon!

I was talking to a TBM friend recently, who told me a friend of hers is going on a mission. (This friend is a widow who went to her bishop for advice on what to do about her house. He told her he was inspired that she go on a mission.) Anyway, I asked how this woman would be able to pay for a mission since my understanding was that it was now a flat fee of around $400 per month, no matter wh

This is not a faked clip. It was a segment on O'Donnell's show on MSNBC called Last Word. I think this aired Tuesday night. I just happened to be watching when it came on. About a year or so ago, somebody on here posted a link to a clip of O'Donnell appearing on the McGlaughlin Group. He started to go off on the topic of JS. I was loving it, but McGlaughlin shut him down and moved on. To

It sounds like a booty call for a foursome. It sounds like the same old shenanigans to me. Maybe I'm just an old cynic.

+1 That's what jumped out at me right away too. Swamp cooers do not exist on the east coast where we have killer humidity. I was well into my 20s before I had ever heard of one. The first one I actually saw was in the dessert in SoCal.

Nothing is scarier than illness of your child. I'm glad your boss understands this. And I hope your child is soon home, safe and happy. You are so right. The main thing wrong with TSSC is that it is not there for its members. Its members are there for it. Mainstream Christian churches go out of their way to serve their members and their community. LDS is always sucking the life out of it

Why would he suddenly want to try to pull you back in? Maybe he's had time to think in Africa, and instead of trying to pull you back in, he was hoping to see how you got out??? Bizarre.

Today's Washington Post has a large article about how conservative Mormons are. (Duh.) This is based on a Pew poll that will be released today. The article is at http://www.washingtonpost.com/todays_paper?dt=2012-01-12&bk=A&pg=4 I found a lot of it to be fairly obvious. But I was surprised by some of it. Less than half of the mormons polled think that abstaining from tea and co

Well it looks like you're into "real" genealogy - where facts are more interesting than made-up stories, built to increase bragging rights. You've got some cool ancestors! Too bad your TBM relatives don't appreciate the realities. Even if the whole morg thing were true, what happens when your TBM relatives meet up with these people in the "afterlife"? Won't the ancestors

Call me cynical, but I suspect she was ignoring your calls while trying to come up with the best "vision/dream" story she could that might get you to change your mind. I once knew a TBM woman who kept trying to convince the choir director that God had told her repeatedly that she should be a soloist. This put the choir guy in a bind because he knew she should not be a soloist but he

Ewww. That is revolting on so many levels. It needs to be stopped immediately and the girls and their parents should be issued an apology (and perhaps a few sessions with a competent therapist to try to undo the damage).

I always thought they said it was "of the devil" so members wouldn't join and find out that the temple ceremony was ripped off from the masons.

I think you did a great service to yourself and everyone under that bishop. It sounds like maybe the RS president might actually consider that pushing the VTs on some people might not bring them back into the fold, but rather push them even farther away. I don't know why so many of them miss that possibility. Love the way you handled it. No drama, just a good conversation. Perhaps she actu

I just saw on Facebook, that one of my TBM friends posted some little story about how Einstein was once asked how it felt to be the smartest man in the world. His reponse was, "I wouldn't know. Go ask James E. Talmage." Yeah right. How would Einstein ever have heard of him anyway? Has anybody else heard this FPR? Where did it come from? Update: Ahh, never mind. If I had b

...our rules were that mate cocido (served in a cup like tea) was okay, but mate bombilla (sipped through a metal "straw" and being passed around to everyone at the table) was NOT okay. This was always a problem for us. Whenever you went into a house in Argentina, the first thing they did was bring out the mate. It's a social custom. If we told them we were only allowed to drink m

...no. Make that NO and NO and NO. There is NOTHING that could convince me I'm wrong. For 7 years I really wanted it to be true. I did EVERYTHING I could to make it be true. I went to all my mtngs. I did callings. I went to institute. I went to the temple. I served a full-time mission. I had doubts that it was what they said it was, but I tried to overcome them. Since I left, I hav

This is supposed to respond to the original post. I'm not arguing with serena's point of view. I hadn't seen her post until after I posted mine. Spongebob is a very sweet, naive, good-hearted sponge. There are characters in the show with less ideal personality traits, but they are all pretty funny to me. I had more of a problem with Rugrats than SpongeBob. The kids like the funny voices

...if you told the bishop that you'd prefer to put off the blessing until you are "worthy" to do it? Seems like that would keep the baby off the ChurchCo records for awhile. Did the police tell you that it was okay for people to enter your house at will, without your permission because you left the door unlocked?? That doesn't sound right to me.

This is more odd than usual, with the men trying to divide and conquer, or whatever. But these people who are SOOOOOO bible-righteous keep ignoring that scripture about not praying in public, but doing it in private where just God can hear you. It seems so gross to me to have a big group of people show up and pretty much announce to the whole restaurant, "Hey look at us! We're more ri

Did you read about the woman who ran a marathon a few weeks ago? She finished the race and two hours later gave birth - she was 9 months pregnant when she ran the marathon! more info: It was the Chicago marathon. Looking at google news just now, I came across a link to this article about Mormons in The Atlantic Magazine. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/10/the-surprise-answer-to-why-romney-and-huntsman-arent-the-most-conservative-republicans/247106/?google_editors_picks=true The guy who wrote this seems to have some confusion on how things work in ChurchCo. Interestingly, the TBMs w

I took them to mean that I'd better not tell. But I really didn't believe that anyone would actually slash my throat or disembowel me. I guess I figured that they would be jailed for life or face the death penalty if they did. It seemed grizzly gross to me, but I thought it was just to emphasize that we absolutely, positively could NOT tell anyone the signs and tokens.

All of the endowment sessions I did were pre-1990 so I know they were there. My one TBM friend readily admits they were there also. But I have to say it - if you phrase the question using a term like "blood oath" they won't know what you're talking about and will deny it. If you had asked ME that way, I probably would have denied it. You will get more admissions if you ask if ther
