I am going to preface this by saying I am an atheist. The best argument against "living gospel" is to use their own teachings. It's helpful to know what is taught. Most don't even know their own religion. I would use the scriptures to argue against their naivete. Teach them what "living" means. Not only is "living" a way to earn money but it also means the purs

Years ago I put the following sign on my door: "You are trespassing if you are here for any religious purpose or on behalf of any religion. We will prosecute to the full extent of the law." Utah law code listed The JW's and Mormons kept coming to the door. Both were kindly told no, and to stop. They kept coming. JW's moreso than the Mo's. It took several more steps before they bo

Apologies if this has already been posted. KUTV news is Utah is reporting on the Pew Research Center report that states: Nearly 60 percent of all millennials raised in a church have stopped going. They're not in search of a new faith, they simply want out. The mass exodus from church pews nationwide has been studied at length in recent years by the Pew Research Center, which tracks Mill

About eight years ago I put up a "Posted No Trespassing" sign. It's easily seen as you walk up to my front door. On the door I had/have posted another sign -- "You are trespassing if you are here for any religious purpose or on behalf of any religion. We will prosecute to the full extent of the law." And the Utah Code is listed. Still, the JW's kept coming. Even shoving one

Get up during fast and testimony meeting and say a number of different things that could include: you are gay and engage in certain gay activities, had an affair, don't believe in God, that the old geezers in SLC aren't called by a God, that alcohol and coffee are A-Okay, that you gamble on a weekly basis, pay for a lady or man of the night and don't give money to the church, and last but not lea

Taking it back to DB for merchandise credit is a great idea. Or, give it back to your aunt and tell her you are certain she could find someone else to give it too. Doing that would give your heart some peace to have someone who appreciates it get the gift...because it doesn't give you any peace....and isn't that what this season is all about?

I can't tell you how many times by husband could have helped get the girls ready....and not just for church. Having said that, in Mormonism, if he helped his wife get the children ready for church that is showing he supports them going to church therefore, supports what is taught, therefore really believes Mormon teachings. Supposedly all of this would be a far stretch, but not within the Mor

Like an abusive relationship, it's not healthy to go back. Find out what you need and fulfill that need with something different. It takes time. You'll find it.

The list describes both Joe Smith and Brigham Young. And Mormons revere these men, and others like them.

Resignation gets you off the local Church books. If you don't resign, you could become a project by members, subjected to their ideas of reactivation. Even after 20 years of no contact by members of the Church you could suddenly be bombarded with visits and/contact, if you don't resign. While you are still on local Church books you will be discussed by members of the Church. It happens mo

Agency = one's decisions or you are free to decide. In the Mormon church people are taught they have "free agency". Free agency, or the shortened version "agency", means you have a decision to make about what you will and won't do. Mormon lessons teach that God and Church leaders aren't telling you what to do, you have the "agency" to decide what to do. After

This reminds me of the Got Milk? American advertising campaign that just ended. Or maybe it's the Mormons subtle hint at the "Milk before meat" statement regarding its teachings. (I don't frequent the board as much anymore. Apologies if this topic has been discussed.) Yesterday as I was driving on the Utah Valley University campus I noticed the following a banner on the outside of

NEW YORK CITY – The humanitarian efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the sole focus of a United Nations meeting Thursday. The meeting was part of the U.N.’s Nongovernmental Organizations Relations and Advocacy section’s Focus on Faith series. Titled “Discovering Mormonism and Its Role in Humanitarian Assistance,” the meeting brought together representative

Roslyn, I had a similar situation to yours. My teen daughter staunchly believed. I didn't expect anything else. I had raised her to be a believer. When she was 12 years old I stopped believing but I didn't say anything to DD per my husbands wishes. For clarification, DH was always a fence sitter when DD was younger. As a teenager DD was told by ward members that she was more valiant than her

It looks like it is an 80s era clip. It's obvious what the clip is saying. *Obey your parents. *Dad is in charge. He is the priesthood holder. *Every member is a missionary. *The father is reminding the son of his DUTIES to bring this teenage boy into the fold. And, if the teenage boy doesn't try he is disappointing the family and the lord. *The teenage son is rebelling by not doing his

You remember correctly Bamboozled. Someone did commit suicide on the grounds of the Provo temple sometime in the last several years. I forget the year. I was the person who read about it in the local Utah County paper and posted information about it on this board. There were posters on this board who thought the story was fictional and demanded evidence. I posted the Daily Herald (Utah County n

I've been reading, recently, about the mineral magnesium and its possible affects of helping those with depression, pms, muscle cramps, and other ailments. It's worth looking into.

Your statement says it perfectly. For my situation, I've stayed as far away from my mother as possible, and it still hasn't been far enough. (I have a protective order.) I have had to limit or eliminate contact with other family members from my life as well. My mother uses others as pawns in her elaborate games. Those 'other family members' for some part or in some way have refused to respect

As an atheist with a child, here's my opinion: There is a childs book about different world relgions. You can purchase the book and give it to your grandchild as a gift. It would be helpful beforehand to explain to the parents why you are giving the gift...so that your grandchild is aware of different world beliefs or it's about educating this little person that not everyone is the same, inclu

If after you have respectfully tried to create these boundaries with your parent(s), and you are still being manipulated, try using their own tactics on them. For example when you are told, "I love you. Christ died for you." Respond, "I love you too, and Joseph Smith was a polygamist." or, "Do you know about Brigham Young's blood atonement?" or, "Have you read a

If I hadn't already heard, first hand, some made up crap myself I would find it hard to believe what has already been stated on this thread. Here's one from my seminary teacher. The earth was created by taking portions of other planets, and that's why we have remnants of dinosaurs here on this planet. To those who have already shared what they heard, thanks for the chuckles.

Robertb- I don't believe suicide can be simplified as the "ultimate form of avoidance". There are many different factors and reasons for it. To lump all suicides as an act of avoidance is a disservice to those who suffer and reinforces ignorance about it.

Here's one example of what you are asking for--- Excerpts from a talk given by David Haight October 1981 My expressions and encouragement this morning are to God’s children whose batteries may be low or with strings in need of tuning, those whose souls were one time touched by the words and teachings of the Master and His servants but have been attracted away into other interests and ac
