Yes. But if you suppress that stuff, it manifests in bad behavior later in life--destructive to others, to oneself, or both. Everyone has suppressed problems and must negotiate them daily. But for people who, because of some idiosyncratic combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental trauma, face challenges that interfere with life in substantial ways, therapy is one of the best w

We never escape our childhoods. For most of us Mormonism is intimately entwined with our families, and leaving one often requires leaving the other. But you are right to focus on your childhood. So many of the patterns in our lives are established in the first two or three years, well before our brains are capable of understanding any part of religion. True healing requires dealing with t

Very cool, Ted. I'm an ageing athlete (still compete a bit) and hang out with a small group of gym rats. I know enough about your sport to realize that 500 is a lot harder to press than to squat or deadlift. Good luck at the masters competitions--and keep away from the juice!

I did watch it. Smart men saying the same trivial things for a biddable audience. I'll bet people pay significant money to see such debates. Once.

I never felt comfortable with Mormons, either. I grew up with them; they were my peers; but my interests were different and I found them narrow and complaisant. I stuck with the church because I liked the vision, but when we left the social price was not very high. We had lots of family trouble to process, but with the exception of a handful of friends it was otherwise good riddance. Powerl

Ignorance is more effective than settling a question. It denies the need for the question in the first place. Tyrannies like ignorance. They encourage it.

Ah yes, ye olde Mormon logic. . . The Book of Mormon proves that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and Joseph Smith's testimony proves that the Book of Mormon is true. It's incontrovertible.

Usually suits are aimed at all the major players. The plaintiff can haul anyone into court and the judge/jury then decide who bears the liability or how to split it up. So my guess is that in most of the suits where the LDS church was significantly involved, both organizations have been targeted. That would be appropriate since the BSA has attached its name to programs run by the LDS church.

Oh, I agree about the word "dirty." I just think it's amusing to imagine someone looking at a rack of pornographic magazines and then having to locate the printed warning to decide whether the cover is pornographic.

Don't overlook the contribution to the discussion made by my favorite prophet, seer, and self-hater, Spencer Kimball. He's the one that told Mormons they were supposed to use "thee" and "thou" when praying because those words are more formal than "you" and, well, "you." More formal. You can't make this stuff up.

It's also in the D&C: the earth purified into a burning glass ball, a universal seer stone. That's in the D&C, isn't it? The image is also in Revelation, and earlier in (2nd) Isaiah and Daniel--all books influenced by Persian Zoroastrianism, in which God was fire. This is another area in which JS lifted ideas from apocryphal Christianity and Kabbalah Judaism. Carry on, wayward

I'll add, Capable, that there is a valuable deterrent effect to these suits. There are other organizations around that shield predators (read: LDS and RCC and many others) and will stand up and take notice when such entities are punished condignly. The Mormons have made some improvements due to legal and political pressure but they have a long way to go. Seeing the Boy Scouts destroyed fo
