Perhaps it’s another era of scraping together bits of other religions to create a recipe of a ‘new and better’ religion, only to realise that your offering still tastes of bull poo. Let’s call ourselves lost Jewish tribes (uh, no) Let’s call indigenous Americans a lost evil Jewish tribe (offensive) Let’s say that there are different degrees of heaven (hmmm) Let’s claim to have

I imagine you’re right. The absolute lack of dialogue and debate made EVERY meeting I ever attended a snore fest.

Apologies for the nickname, Rubicon. I have a tendency to shorten names all the time.

As I have not stepped foot in a Mormon church (and fast and testimony meeting) in well over a decade, I wondered if testimonies were the same pat blah-blah of, “I know this church is the only true church, I know that the BoM is the word of god and the Bible so long as it has been translated correctly. I know that Joseph Smith and Russell full-Nelson are prophets, seers and revelators, etc” I

Oh messy. I’m sad for your loss. I light candles in cathedrals—I will light one for you and your wife.

Yes, you speak the truth L-dub. So many doctrines in Mormonism are tragic for different people, in different ways. I imagine everyone on this board will spend a lifetime trying to undo aspects of hurt that the church has provided us as a lasting legacy. Yay.

“I'll ask you how far your logic goes.” It doesn’t go very far this late into the night/early in the morning, I’m afraid… Pre-emptive wars/actions to contain escalation or prevent a bad thing from becoming badder rely upon good intel, right? I mean the war in Iraq was justified (at least in the media) by the supposedly reliable intelligence that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass

You are absolutely right, Kentish. I did mean ‘starting a war’. Yes, sometimes there is no alternative but to fight back and hope you can prevail against aggression. My position will always be that there is no moral justification for starting a war.

Southern Germany is beautiful—I have been to Munich a few times and if you spent your mission tracting that area you will have seen some very lovely places. I think you’re right, looking at experiences as either adventures or a chance to learn something can give things meaning. I am interested in your nomadic life—it’s something I really enjoy. I’ve made my own campervan from a cargo v

No, there is generally no moral justification for war, which is probably why all leaders who start them call them conflicts or annexation or retribution for some perceived slight. The war against Communism, Fascism, drugs, and any other abstract enemy we make of one another is just a farce. To my mind, war is waged to justify the struggle for power and domination through undermining (exterminat

It’s great that you are able to reconcile parts of your past and bring the experiences forward and use them as a way of inspiring your present and future. Not to rain on your parade, but I read the stories of a lot of RMs, and their missions sound like 18mos-2yrs of intense work where they were often hungry, cold, uninspired, scared, tired and I’m glad I never went on a mission. I’m pret

My parents still (as far as I know) have a copy of that odious document hanging on their bedroom wall. It makes me sick to read it—completely invalidates my relationship and, yet, my mother refers to my spouse as her *-in law. Aghhh, the mental gymnastics she has to do!

Las Cruces, Jal or Hobbs, NM? January lows are around 27F, but I imagine it wouldn’t stay below freezing for too long.

The sexual orientation has nothing to do with it…an adult who is sexually attracted to minors, straight or gay, is a pedophile. If this had been a 25 year old male grooming and kidnapping a young girl the headline wouldn’t have read, “Heterosexual”, so labelling it gay isn’t really a responsible way of writing about it. It is an adult showing predatory behaviour over a minor. Just

Claire, I grew up in four corners area of the USA. Amazing how we all just shuffle around the globe filling spaces that others have vacated and leaving spaces for others to fill.

Yes, I imagine it must have! Helicopters and thunder used to do it to my uncle, who fought in Vietnam, and was severely traumatised. My MIL (RIP) used to say the same about the sirens, though she also admitted that the war was a bit exciting for her five year-old self. She was living in Manchester and her dad was a sheet metal worker there. Her grandchildren were always asking her to, “tell us

The Imperial War Museum is an incredible place to visit if ever you find yourself in London. It’s a bit of a misnomer to call it that, as it glorifies neither Imperialism nor war, but has a lot of contextual information about various conflicts around the world, along with aircraft suspended from the ceilings. I noticed that the article you linked, Nightingale, had a photo of the pilot with a sm
