I've never tried but suspect I too would be rubbish at rewriting hymns however, on the rare occasions I've gone to church in the last nine years, I've entertained (for want of a better word) myself by adding 'in the bath' or 'in bed' to the end of each hymn title. Every 21 May, my wedding anniversary, I think of my ex-husband and his new wife. Technically we're still 'sealed' in the temple. Just think, if the church is true after all AND I become faithful, we can all live together hapilly ever after in mormon heaven. I don't think they need to worry unduly about any of that happening.

I think they take their lead from this board and other areas of criticism. How many times have posters on here commented that the church is all about Joseph Smith (e.g. Merry Smithmas) and not JC.
