LOL :-D You could do worse than asking for that shield - it's really beautiful and would fit perfectly in a corner of your living room for when you're not feeling sociable ;-)

"the church's answer to David Miscavige" That's exactly what Bednar is. Very well said.

I understand, Kerri. To me, as a nevermo, it was a horrifying, frightening book because it showed the hardships and emotional sterility of so many early Mormon women's lives, all in the name of religion? Impressive faith, certainly, but for what?

Thanks everyone, but never forget that the Internet allows us to hide innumerable faults and only present the aspects that we want... Love you too :-)

I too worked in a library, the library of The Royal Society of Medicine, No. 1, Wimpole Street, London W1, from 1979 to 1980. Although I was only a lowly Library Assistant, there was a lot more to it than a filing clerk's job - and the real librarians with qualifications were extremely knowledgeable and competent. I suspect it's a case of only getting out what you put in...

"In pigs, everything's good to eat" has been the motto of French farmers (whom we call peasants with no pejorative insinuation...) for centuries - and they do indeed know how to use all parts of a pig to the delectation of gastronomes everywhere. Mormonism, not so much.

As I was reading a rather good and very funny article about UK politics (which I won't bore you with but can be read here: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/26/tories-plot-poll-bad-public-services ), I was overcome with awe at the onward march of mormonism when I came across the following line: "Will Dry Humping the Hard Right Bring You Within a Million Miles Of Winning

Quinn's fascinating book reveals significant amounts of occult beliefs and practices by the Smiths. Quite an eye opener - and of course, Quinn was excommunicated for it (although he remained a believing mormon...).

Thank you, LW, for re-establishing the facts, although I admit to rather liking the idea of Jesus being a "poor rabbit" (please don't go back and "correct" it or buck-toothed Jesus will weep;-).

You're right, the reviews are not only awful, but also unanimous. The place sounds horrible. If it were just scamming parents out of dollars, it would be bad enough, but their mistreatment also causes genuine harm. Disgusting.

At first I thought this was satire... Aaaaargh! We in Europe do not remember strongly enough that among the stirrings leading the awful events on our continent 90 years ago and after were book burnings... I agree, Anybody. I'm against book bans. I wouldn't even ban The Art Of The Deal ;-). And to be clear, I do not mean having what might be called "age-inappropriate" books accessible

Yes, a very happy retirement to spend with Claire. Mine is also on the horizon (18 months). On a personal note, as a fascinated/horrified nevermo when I first came to the board, Steve's thorough posts with historical references and commentary were crucial to helping me understand (from the outside only, I know, because I shall always be a nevermo ;-) the strange, twisted thing that is mormonis

I would've said that it's a nice way of saying "an American trying to do a British accent", but then I'm nasty that way. Just as Brits' imitations of American accents tend to be bad (listen to drama on the BBC...).
