Meh. I generally give great reviews of books I read, but this one wasn't to me that great. Maybe I was looking for more than there was there. It is chock full of historical data, property records, how much 19th century LDS leaders accrued in wealth, and so on. So if you're into that you will likely enjoy it. What I was looking for was contemporary insight, hopefully juicy insight. Dis

The proclamation will remain divine until it isn't. And then its authors will be thrown under the bus with "We don't know why those men said those things, but they were a product of their time."

Why do people who talk to god always have their conversations with him/her/it alone? Wouldn't it be better for god to appear to all of us all at once to clear up any confusion?

And I agree: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/10/03/this-mormon-wrote-the-worst-response-so-far-to-the-las-vegas-shooting/ To save you the trouble: "If the victims in the Las Vegas incident were observing the Sabbath day, they would have been safe."

"The best days are ahead for the kingdom of God on the earth," said President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency. "Opposition will strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, as it has since the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Faith always defeats fear. Standing together produces unity." I can't help but think that's whistling in the dark as he sees what m

Nelson wants to know what our lives would be like without the Book of Mormon. My answer: It would have been far more genuine for many years. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865690015/President-Russell-M-Nelson-The-Book-of-Mormon-What-Would-Your-Life-be-Like-Without-it.html

I think it's hard to say. I sometimes worry about exactly your concern (especially when I see things like what went on in the special Senate election last night in Alabama--they are both scary ideologues.) But then I think there are thankfully enough enlightened people who will tug things back in the other direction in 2018. We will see, I suppose.

It's not unlike "losing ones testimony." No one "loses" anything. They GAIN enlightenment. But to say someone may lose something if they're not careful keeps people in line.

Their music is okay. But I can't ignore the "Mormon" in "Mormon Tabernacle Choir," so I can't stand listening to them. More--and maybe it's just me--since I left Mormonism, they come across as typically Mormon arrogant and smug, communicating that THEY have some unique hold on truth. I know they don't, so the smugness is even more abrasive.

Especially one who was recently Speaker of the House. How handy that will be. http://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2017/09/22/former-utah-house-speaker-named-chief-lobbyist-for-mormon-church/

My dear wife of 46 years and I have been mellow since we started dating at 15. We love and respect each other but are very low on formality. We like it that way. Deep into our Mo'ism years I remember an arrogant stake leader berating me for not opening and holding the car door for my wife as we were leaving a stake meeting. On reflection I so wish I'd spoken up and said something along the

Adam, This sentence says it all: "I really want to understand what my father has been doing so i can better understand what i am dealing with because i have never really known him deep down other than an angry and abusive narcissist that thinks hes on gods royalty list." In Mormonism, the highest measure of value for someone other than the real big shots is going to the temple an

You nailed it for us. DW and I discuss this almost every Sunday. Just 15 minutes ago (as we were returning from a restaurant where we sat, sipped coffee, ate breakfast, read the paper together) I made the comment that THIS is how Sundays were meant to be. Relaxing, rejuvinating, enjoyable. Not the incessant rushing, guilt-ridden mess that they were.

"How can critics say that Joseph Smith, in his youth, was so scholarly that he could or would deliberately take passages from the Bible and skillfully make it appear that they were part of the Book of Mormon manuscript?" I think that's pretty easy to answer.

Bam, I take your point. Thanks. But I think especially in the case of missionaries this kind of behavior sets people up for a lifetime of dependency on the Corporation for guidance on things anyone else would think through for themselves. But maybe that's not an accident...

I sincerely don't get this. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/church-releases-statement-on-hurricane-irma Really, this is necessary? What would have become of them if--like millions of other people in the hurricane's path--they DIDN'T rece

Q1: Does god not hear the prayers of one person in need? A1: Incorrect. He hears them, but he devotes his energies on the cases receiving the most votes, as evidenced by the number of prayers being voiced. Q2: I mean, is it a signal-to-noise-ratio thing? You know, so many prayers all the time that it's just noise to god, but if lots of people all pray for the same thing, that prayer ris

In a moment of boredom last night, I went through the comments section following Peterson's post and copied his snarkiest comments: "You're embarrassing yourself with such idiocy."
