I think it's like the movie, "What Dreams May Come" and we create our own afterlife. I never saw anyone fight dying as hard as my father did, while trying to convince everyone that he knew he was going to the CK. If he really thought that, he'd have let go long before he did. But I'd imagine he wasn't real sure that God wouldn't hold certain abusive things he did against him. I told

Where does God go to get the blood and guts that were sucked out so they can fill the corpse with formaldehyde and methanol. I grew up with the mythology that the physical body is resurrected and put back together blood and all and the church was dead set against cremation. God would fix it for people in countries that required cremation. But if you chose it, you were S.O.L. Now the idea o

Oh, thanks. Now I'll have the Time Warp playing in my head all day. It's just a hand to the left back And then a grip with the right. just make the insides of feet touch And bring your knees in tight. And you might get a sixth point That really drives you insane. Let's do the Five Points again Let's do the Five Points again!

I remember that well. I was still a cult member but it sent shivers up my spine. The most chauvanistic thing you could spout off and for some reason, he thought it was cute. I think the only ones who had a problem with the Saturday night penishood sessions were the more vocal Ordain Women crowd. Most of the mormon women I knew loved those night that they got rid of the men. And no, they di

I wish you as good and pain-free last few months as is possible, dear Heidi. It is brave of you to share this with us but it makes me realize how much we long-timers have become like family. Thank you for all your input and wisdom you've shared. Keeping you in my thoughts.

The attorney I worked with during the pandemic was really the only one on the Western side of this state who really specialized in student loans. His business was consumer law and he made an ok living but not big attorney bucks. You really can't with that type of law, when you mostly have desperate clients and there's no recovery to take a percentage of. But he was in the business to help peop

THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. First of all, is your loan a Federal Student Loan or a private loan? If a private loan, you may be able to work out a payoff, however, they do have to give you notice before they garnish your wages so if you haven't heard anything, you might not want to poke a sleeping bear. The statute of limitations does apply to private loans. Often, when it gets closer to that

Haha. Colonel Thomas Kane was a piece of work. Quite entertaining though.

One thing I've realized lately is that a number of my friends and family who are active members or even who have left the church or are nuanced mormons, are still very much believers in conspiracy theories. But isn't that the thought process we were raised with? I know I was. Satan was out to get the church and had a bottomless bag of tricks. That pattern of thinking is more ingrained than the

Couldn’t have said it better. Thanks. Looking back, all I can think is “where was my brain?” But it’s all I knew. It was so frustrating, especially with an over-the-top misogynistic patriarchal father who couldn’t give a rat’s patoot whether his daughters accomplished anything other than finding a husband and giving him grandkids. But I never could stand up for myself and pursue

I’ll never forget being in Kinkos in Provo years ago and this lady was taking forever at the counter and her kids were running around wild and knocking things over and everyone in line had smoke coming out their ears. One guy grabbed one of them and told him to go stand by his mother and Mother Karen shot him a bitch face. They kept running. Finally Karen hollered at them and said “Lehi!

As we see with so many things these days, people believe what they want to believe and seek out sources to back up their already-chosen beliefs. The sources do NOT have to be credible. And when they get close to something that looks credible but that challenges their paradigm, it is very scary for them. The fake “prophets” have been 100% right about one thing. If you don’t want to lose

Just got back from traveling to CA for one last Friday. The wedding was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever been to. The venue was outdoors, the greenery and flowers were abundant with only family and close friends—- about 50 people, and still a little COVID aware. There are active, inactive, and non members in both families and there was no “you’re not worthy to be here” crap. Beautifu

I think people in Utah have a hard time grasping how small some of these temples are. Oh, they can make them look grand in the close up photos or paintings, but if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you can drive right past them and miss them. The Memphis temple, which was rebuilt and opened last year is way smaller than the stake center and was just built in a corner of the stake center

Also went through the old ceremony in the 70s. On the drive home my mother turned to me and said, in an excited voice, "well, how do you feel?" The only thing I was thinking was "THAT's the church I go to? The one that makes fun of the Catholics for THEIR rituals?" But I just said "tired." It truly is lunacy. But I can laugh about it now.

I had this podcast on all day while I was working. Got through all three episodes and was really blown away by his story. Yet, part of me was happy to know that the so-called church is ignoring the reality of where Millennials and GenZers are really at when it comes to belief. Just that many more who will leave. And the exmormon community is booming with all these formerly super-involved activ

Exactly. The defense was the best any guilty person could possibly get. I hope someday we don’t have to film people dying to begin to get justice.

Wasted a decade? I wasted three. Got my Associates from Ricks then did my Mormon female duty. At 45 and as a single mother I returned to college for my bachelors. I knew that even though I’d be 48 when I graduated and 58 when I paid off my student loans, I would still have a much better last 20 years of work life. I was right. It was worth it. Good luck. Soon you’ll be 10 years past graduati

Depends on your definition of “smart.” I think Yes, by the common acceptance of the meaning. However, they can be extremely smart and extremely gullible at the same time.

We lived overseas in a military ward in the 70s when they announced the change from going to church twice (or three times, depending on your genitalia) every Sunday to the 3-hr block. In RS they were talking about the new nursery program and one officer’s wife said “that would be a great position for lower enlisteds.” Guess what we were called to a few days later? The church callings pret

Yeah, if they started going after crooks, I’m sure many of us would have family members called to disciplinary councils. I certainly do. But no, just high profile people who dare admit or even allude to the fact that JS was an easily-provable con artist. Crooks don’t hurt the bottom line. As long as they give the Corp of Rusty their 10% of the haul from their crimes, it’s all good. But do t

I was shocked the last time I was in Utah-two years ago. There is no longer any open space between Utah Valley and SLC area. I drove past Thanksgiving Point twice before I saw it-dwarfed by all the high-tech business buildings around it. It’s a completely different place than when I left in 2004. My good friend has worked for a tech company in South Valley for years. He said it’s becoming a M

Agreed. I am MUCH more afraid of being gunned down by the suburban goobers in my state (and I'm not talking about the known criminals) than I am of being bombed by North Korea. The legislature of our great state of Gooberville, passed a bill yesterday that Governor Jethro said he will sign that makes it legal for anyone over 18 to carry a weapon, openly or concealed. No permit, no training, no

Not so easy for the mormon kids either. I graduated near the top of my class in high school so I'd had classes with all the same group of honors kids. As badly as I wanted to go to my 10-year class reunion, I couldn't bring myself to go because I was embarrassed to see those same kids. We were 28 and they all had degrees and advanced degrees, great jobs and accomplishments. I had an Associates

Same for Utah. Idaho and Utah are very beautiful states. When it comes to scenery. That's the ONLY good thing you can say about either one of them.

My good mormon father beat the hell out of us--mostly his older kids, not so much the younger ones. My (ex)husband's father did too. I wish I could say I never spanked my own kids because of the fear of my father that his abuse instilled in me, but I can't. I guess I justified it at the time because they got nothing compared to what I used to get and it was rare compared to my childhood. My hus

“The omniboring God.” How perfect. Boring boring boring. Boring and generic because they can no longer whitewash the history and doctrine as easily, so they just whitewash the entire institution. Rusty is just continuing with what was really put into motion under Wrinkley Hinckley, followed by Monsoon. If it’s fun or cultural, it has to go. Activities for fellowship, youth conferences, dan
