I just discovered Nina Simone and decided to try one of her songs yesterday. I was going to follow up with her version of "My Baby Just Cares for Me", but decided Renee Olstead's version was more in my range. My husband is away on yet another business trip, and I'm hating it. But at least I got a new mic interface, which I think is a big improvement. And I'm also getting better at

I had my dogs tested on Embark. Both results were very accurate in our case. One of my dogs is a street dog from Kosovo, and they correctly identified him as an East European Village Dog. One of his DNA relatives looked like he could be his brother, comes from Kosovo, and lives in Sweden. My other dog is a beagle mix-- with coonhound and Llewellyn Setter. They got that right, too. I was

I seem to remember that I first heard about how wacko PCC is on this message board. I was genuinely sad when they took down The Student Voice, especially since PCC was so pissed that a guy they expelled managed to get the domain name for the school and wouldn't relinquish it, even after they sued him. LOL... I also genuinely enjoyed some of the posters. Most of them weren't unlike the peopl

This doesn’t surprise me. PCC makes BYU look like a bastion of common sense, liberalism, and academic freedom. That place is notorious for expelling students. A bunch of them used to run a very interesting message board that spilled lots of crazy tea about PCC. I used to hang out there a lot, and I was shocked by the insane rules supposed adults were paying to live by.

Bwahahahaha… I thought he was still active because of his album, where he said he left a coffee shop during an earthquake and got hit by a brick. He didn’t want to die in a coffee shop as a Mormon. I guess he went inactive since the album was made. I think he’s funny regardless. I now live a couple of hours from Stuttgart, and we go there somewhat often (for the dentist :D). I h

Some time ago, someone from RfM introduced me to LDS comedian Bengt Washburn’s clean brand of comedy. I downloaded his album and found it legitimately funny, even though I am a nevermo. Turns out his wife is an Air Force officer and she has been sent to Stuttgart, which is where I spent six years. I now live in Wiesbaden, but go to Stuttgart to see my dentist. :D Tonight, Bengt is perf

They probably do now. This was years ago. And even if they think it’s extortion (and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree), the system in the US is such that not tipping is causing someone to work for free. Incidentally, I have noticed that some people in Europe who work in the business would love tips added to their regular pay. We do give Trinkgeld, but not the way we would in the States

I used to wait tables when I was much younger. It was just after I finished two years in the Peace Corps. I was never so often so sick, so often! Even when I worked at a busy restaurant, I didn't like the tipping system. It's true I made a lot of money, which helped me go to graduate school, but there was a lot of pressure to get people in and out of the restaurant, which was actually a p

I'm so sorry... I wish you much peace and comfort. I always enjoy your posts. I have a feeling we're about the same age, and that makes you very relatable. I wish I could say something to take away the pain of your tremendous loss.

Oh, thanks so much, guys! I heard that backing track randomly the other night and decided I enjoyed the arrangement so much that I wanted to sing it. I don’t think I ever so much as did that one at karaoke. It turned out nicely. I followed up with “Why Don’t You Do Right” by Julie London, because I wanted to do something in a different style. I think I have a knack for snarky jazz s

Bravo! I totally agree, Susan. Ever since I heard Meghan say that she didn’t know who Prince Harry was and had never Googled him, I got the sense that she isn’t entirely honest about most things. Add that to the fact that her half brother tried to warn Harry about her, and she’s estranged from so many family members… well, she kind of reminds me of my husband’s ex wife. I just h

Totally agree with this characterization of Americans by people in other countries. I am an American, but I live in Germany, and it always shocks me when I run into Americans here. So many of them are super loud and obnoxious, and they seem oblivious about it. My husband and I have taken to speaking quietly when we’re out. One time, we were in a restaurant in Slovenia and there were a b

I totally agree with you, summer. There are always at least three sides to any situation. I also agree that shunning is very hurtful and damaging. My husband lost 15 years with one of his daughters and even more with the other because of shunning. It’s a terrible waste.

I used to play clarinet myself, many years ago. I inherited my sister’s Signet. Took a year of band. I wish I had stuck with it. I also took piano when I was very young and my teacher discovered I have perfect pitch. But I hated practicing and lacked discipline. My mom was an organist for many years and used to nag me a lot. So I quit piano… got a horse instead. Didn’t sing a no

I like to make up parodies. I have kind of an off color sense of humor, too. A few years ago, I made a video called "Big Pink Dildo" set to "Big Yellow Taxi", because some woman in the local yard sale group was trying to sell a used toy. YouTube age restricted it. LOL

One of the things I love about playing guitar is when I find myself playing a song that just pops into my head. Or I recognize chords in a song and realize I can play it if I want to. Before the pandemic, I couldn't do that. And it's getting easier for me to accompany myself on songs I've always wanted to do, but couldn't find backing tracks for. At some point, I'd love to write a song an

Yep... I have five guitars now. Four of them are Fenders! And I've been using Fender Play to learn, although I think I'm outgrowing it. When I'm a little more skilled, I'd like to reward myself with a guitar made by a company that is known more for acoustic guitars. I definitely prefer playing acoustic over electric.

Some of you folks might remember that when COVID-19 hit, I decided to pick up a guitar for the first time in my life. I'd been wanting to learn to play for many years. For some reason, it took lockdowns and the threat of a mysterious and deadly virus to get me to pull the trigger. I'm still playing guitar. I don't play super skillfully, but I have managed to scratch out a few songs. I even

That shooting in Chesapeake happened not that far from where I grew up. I have a lot of friends there. It's just so sad to read about yet another senseless act of violence. Nothing is being done about that, but God forbid someone need an abortion. It's just so senseless. I'm glad I live in Germany.

What a lovely memory! I think the most exciting visitor we had at my elementary school was a guy who bore a striking resemblance to Burl Ives and sang, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." I think that song was eventually retired as our state song, for obvious reasons! LOL

I had never heard of them before, but based on the comments, they were very well loved in Duluth, Minnesota. One person wrote that they went to her funeral and her sister shared about how she preferred playing with trucks over dolls. I might have to listen to more of their stuff. Thanks for sharing.
