Looking at your comments and those of others in this sub-thread, I am reminded of some other notable exception to the first-name usage rule. If you work in, say the Federal Social Security office and you deal directly with the public, you *always* use only your last name when dealing with that public. This rule also applies to certain state and local employees such as teachers and police officers

I don't know if Mormons do it more than others, but the phenomenon you're describing applies to many people of varying faiths, especially those who hold fundamentalist views on sex and politics.

While I agree with both Unconventionalideas and Summer (see above posts), I would offer that religions tend to attract scoundrels. Why? Because religions are solely based on belief--no proof of claims is required. I think that I would agree with a more controversial statement; namely that religions are founded by scoundrels. While we have little information concerning Muhummad and Jesus Christ

It's very much like some of the things I've read about where hostages learn to identify with the behaviors and goals of their kidnappers (anybody remember Patty Hearst?) I guess some people prefer the devil they know than the devil they don't...

Here is a quotation taken from MarkC's blog post: "humans are irrational. They find a million excuses to justify their beliefs." Put another way, like the rest of the animal kingdom, we humans are ruled by our emotions. That is the one truth religious texts (and not just Christianity) continue to tell us, though many fail to recognize it for what it is.

Sadly, what BYU-I did was absolutely legal because it is not a state university but a privately-held religious college. The only real way to reform the situation is to publicize what BYU-I did to even more media and more members of the general public. This may help to insure that the school thinks twice before not permitting an ex-Mormon to attend an on-campus public event in the future.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w13xtvs0/episodes/player P.T. Joshua was a "prophet and faith healer" who died in 2021. He operated a cult that is now run by his widow. The BBC got involved when a former cult member contacted the British broadcaster to tell her story. Many facets of this story should be familiar to ex-Mormons and those who read the works of Rick Hasen. While ther

I disagree with the subject line by the OP because Mr. Nelson doesn't actually describe anything, only mentions (possibly taunts) that he has it. That said, what we're seeing here with the Second anointing is very real and very human. You know the old playground taunt: "i got something that you can't have. I got something that you can't have." You see it in the beliefs of Q-an

Until I read (and sent to this Board with much less commentary) an article about the role of Leonard Leo in getting certain types of judges in to the U.S. Court system, I had very little idea of who he was, either. The fact that I either didn't know who these people were or how important they were in policy-making for a certain subset of

One very "good" reason why the proposed law is *so* controversial is that *not* reporting child abuse to authorities is now very popular outside of the LDS community, especially among white evangelicals. I just read a piece a few days back at dailykos.com (now I can't find it) that was a three-parter about this very issue among the white conservative evangelical crowd, and it gave examp

True. Its Christian origins can be traced back to the Acts of the Apostles, Chapters 1 (where Jesus makes the promise of a spirit coming to the Apostles) and 2 (where the Spirit actually appears). In most Christian religions, the Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit are synonomous, though the former wording is not used in the Acts of the Apostles, and the word "Holy" is not attached to the word &

The Wikipedia entry is correct--I lived through that. What strikes me now when thinking about the situation is how members of Mr. Meekam's own political party voted to hold him to account by impeaching him. That very same party would more likely today completely back his efforts. And that, I'm afraid, says a lot about the times we live in in the good old U.S.A.
