...while Part 3 focuses on Gothard, the entirety of the article isn't just on him. Another (if I'm counting correctly) six evangelical ministers with questionable behaviors are profiled in this story, including one (MacArthur) who runs a very popular national radio ministry that is carried widely on noncommercial Protestant stations and through commercial religious networks carried on stations ow

I just posted about not refinding this story in another thread. I've now found it! https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/1/28/2219593/-Evangelicals-REALLY-don-t-get-it-about-sexual-assault-Here-are-some-examples-Part-3 This is part 3 but it has links to parts 2 and 1 in it and both of the earlier parts are summarized at the beginning of Part 3. I'm going to quote from the bottom of Part 3--

One very "good" reason why the proposed law is *so* controversial is that *not* reporting child abuse to authorities is now very popular outside of the LDS community, especially among white evangelicals. I just read a piece a few days back at dailykos.com (now I can't find it) that was a three-parter about this very issue among the white conservative evangelical crowd, and it gave examp

True. Its Christian origins can be traced back to the Acts of the Apostles, Chapters 1 (where Jesus makes the promise of a spirit coming to the Apostles) and 2 (where the Spirit actually appears). In most Christian religions, the Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit are synonomous, though the former wording is not used in the Acts of the Apostles, and the word "Holy" is not attached to the word &

NPR ran a story about the inability of people in states with anti-abortion laws to seek abortions after having been raped on Wednesday. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2024/01/24/1226161416/rape-caused-pregnancy-abortion-ban-states From that story comes the following profile: "Each number, a story Samantha Hansen has been an outspoken rape survivor for years, but only r

The Wikipedia entry is correct--I lived through that. What strikes me now when thinking about the situation is how members of Mr. Meekam's own political party voted to hold him to account by impeaching him. That very same party would more likely today completely back his efforts. And that, I'm afraid, says a lot about the times we live in in the good old U.S.A.

Nightingale wrote in part: "Can anyone have such a wide-ranging copyright? Just wondering." The answer in the United States is yes and no. According to the business law class I was required to take many moons ago (back in the late 1980s) as part of the MBA I was seeking at the time, I was told that You can copyright or trademark almost anything but with a catch. If the word or phr

Quoting from the article, Nightingale wrote in part: "“The priest, Fr. Ramon Guidetti, dedicated his homily Dec. 31 to marking the anniversary of the death of Pope Benedict XVI, whom he named as being "the true pope" who "never fled the barque of Peter."" Regardless of whether or not the celebration was a Latin or English or any other language Mass, I would n

...I am not heartened by it. One of the big things pushing house prices out of reach for many, especially the young, is the purchase of real estate for investment purposes. Why? Because there is only a finite amount of real estate and when investors begin purchasing real estate for investment purposes, that crowds out those who are trying to purchase places in which they can reside. And it is a d

...the substance of your post and LW's response, I think it should be noted that we now know that there is a genetic factor to obesity as well as an eating one. So yes, I would focus more on the possible depression that follows after exiting Mormonism (if there is a way to gauge that) over obesity, especially if other members of the obeseperson's family are also obese.

While I agree with both Heading and LW about the mislocation of the Shah in Chomskycat's post, I will say that the latter is right on the money with regard to the behavior of the Shah of Iran prior to his downfall. In fact, there was a liberal group that was backing the Iranian revolution, thinking that it could control the behavior of the religious Ayatollah Khomenii after the downfall. Man, wer

Lot's Wife wrote in part: "To people alive today, the story of Christ--"processed Jesus," if you will--seems miraculous. So a lot of people are willing to believe it, to see it as an instance of pristine divine intervention." It should be noted here that in most cases, children are taught the stories of Jesus 2.0 before they ever learn about the sciences and the scientif

...would be more frightening if it were not present. That is because of the democratic (small d) nature of the society we live in. If you were to live in another country, perhaps China or Russia, any changes, though present, would occur much more slowly as the bosses on top attempted to hold on to power, no matter what. And, in truth, the LDS church's behavior in this regard is more like that of

As of January 1, 2024, I will be retired from my voluntary position as member of the Governor's Council on Blindness and Visual Impairment (GCBVI) for the state of Arizona, a position I held for 13 years. I can tell you that over the years, the state's services for the blind whose operations we oversee, has used surveys many times, both paper and online, to find out how its clientele view the pro

The Mashmakhan song peaked nationally at #30 around Halloween of 1970. In some markets, including Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, it did much better. I have the track on a Various artists CD collection and I must say that I think the lyrics are rather odd for a pop song.

No. And it should be pointed out that the Roman Pope took pains to make it clear that the blessings were not for the marriages themselves but for the individuals asking for them. Even with that, however, Russell M. Nelson is not going to go down that path.

Liberty Bell wrote in part: "By the way it is nonsensical to worship "change". Change is not the same as progress. It's something which happens anyway and can be good, bad or indifferent." Everything about us, and yea, even ourselves, is always changing, regardless of whether or not that change is for the good. Put another way, Aristotle was absolutely wrong (as shown in

Now that LW has replied, I will add some insights. The ADA has been very successful in some areas, including increasing wheelchair access to public buildings and placing braille notation on elevators in many public, and some private buildings. Areas where ADA gains have yet to be realized in part or in full include: the unavailability of accessible paper currency to blind people living in the U.S

While I agree with you in principle, I think it likely that had the Supreme Court actually ruled on the case's actual merits, many in the disabled community and their supporters would have been absolutely up-in-arms over the legal rights that were taken away from them. This "non-decision" at least allows the disabled community and its supporters to continue to have access to this necess
