My study on crime concluded that there is a direct relationship between the likelihood of punishment and the rate of crime. There is also a relationship between the crime rate and the rate of family dysfunction as measured by divorce and by the rate of illegitimate births. These are the principal determinants of the rate of crime.

Sneak in a tape recorder! And, next time add a cross to the outfit. I would like to see that on the evening news. Actually, it would not surprise me to see a quick turn-about and allowing the wearing of crosses as the denial flies in the face of almost all Christian churches.

Without it appearing that I agree with Huckabee, it must be noted that it is not just a matter of religion being out of schools but that moral values are not being taught. Old readers contained stories with specific moral values. While those of us of age are able to distinguish values in our pleuralistic society, young people are left without a rudder, without a clear concept of right and wrong,

Actually, the founders did not mean to prevent having a state religion, only preventing a national religion. In Connecticut, the two political parties were originally those supporting a state-financed Congregational Church and those opposing it. The issue of religion freedom led Roger Williams to establish Rhode Island. Pennsylvania was a Quaker colony. In the long run, all decided to allow freed

Traditional clothing was known as "Sunday go-to-meetin' clothes", usally a man's only suit even if a bit worn and tattered and for a woman her only decent dress. Nothing ostentatious, The Bible sets forth a standard of sorts. People were not to wear clothing of the opposite sex. Otherwise, the clothing was only set forth for priests at the temple. And that does not conform to present or

1. Meeting houses around where I live are kept updated with new carpets etc etc. Guess I'm in a special area, lots of wealthy members. 2. The idea of non-white shirts is very appealing to me. At the non-LDS service I attend, I wore a purple/red (mauve?) shirt and got lots of positive feedback a couple of weeks ago. I have to wear a white shirt every day to work so it is nice when I don't get a n

DW did not accept my recommendation to wear pants today. Mind you, I personally think dresses are more appropriate for worship. However, as I explained to DW, the principle is what is involved and that women should stand up for equality. My mother had the ambition (not met) of being a congresswoman back as far as about 1919. I have also pointed out to DW that the BoA and other alleged latter-day

Yes, the Parkers are LDS. They belong to the Newtown ward of the Yorktown, NY Stake. Hey, during his talk used on CNN last night the building was right there. Again, if TSCC would help reduce overall depression by dropping tea and coffee from the WoW, the remaining need can be better met for mental health. TSCC is already dropping the claim that tea and coffee are bad for health and relying o

TSCC should drop the prohibitions on tea and coffee. Tea and coffee will do more than any single thing to reduce depression at little expense.

My oldest grandson will soon be on his mission and last summer, besides telling me that the BoM was translated by JS from reformed Egyptian, noted he has no Bible and has never read it. I remain aghast. It is bad enough that McConkie labeled one book of the Bible "biblical trash" but to know nothing of it?

1. I think the attack on Huckabee is only partially correct. The theology is a bit off but the political positioning is no worse than those who would use the incident to outlaw guns. Mind you, I am not a gun supporter but I think, unless more fact prove me wrong, that tighter gun laws would have been of little avail in avoiding the incident. After all, look at the one across the ocean where there

I beg to differ. Beliefs and actions are two different things. As a TBM he was, simply, a hypocrite. Nevertheless, he may have been a TBM just the same. From the non-LDS scriptures we have the parable of the two sons. One promised to do what he father wanted and did not do it. The other refused but then did what was wanted. Part of the dropping of being a NOM is that we no longer need be hypoc

Correct. The women should start off with only a couple with the objective of snowballing each week. If one is brought into the bishop's office, she should enlist two more to join her the next week. If they get brought in, each should be two more, etc. Then the matter should reachthe media, ward by ward, stake by stake.

You just skip tithing settlement. Once December passes it is too late and wait another year. Why didn't you think of it? The only way the bishop got me to meet with him was by my going to hometeach his family and his bringing me into his home office. Otherwise, simply don't see him.

Ah, so that is why we are on the cookie and caroling list! Without the coffee, I might be rehooked on the cookies. Of course, the carolers were told to go to our home and yours. They did not think of it themselves. TSCC is like that.

JS said he gave a fire and brimstone sermon to the people in one town during Zion's camp! The people asked what he was about so he gave them the sermon. This in the JS's History of the Church.

JS also took form other books including Bradford's History of Plimoth Plantation and Bunyan's Pilgrim-s Progress and since I personally noted these, surely other books as well. He also added some of his own imagination.

1. In my parents' youth (beginning of the 20th century) oranges were a rare treat and hence they considered it very special to get one for Christmas. My mother loved marzapan so we got one piece in the stocking. We also got penlight flashlights and another item or two. 2. Stockings pre-existed mormonism and are simply copied by TSCC.

Oh yes! A single character would provide full sentences or paragraphs of translation into pseudo-King James English! That also explains how JS got such inspiration from individual characters of Egyptian in translating the Book of Abraham. How do GAs live with themselves?

Reviewing what WAS included, one notes virtually no difference from LDS doctrine. Explanation of more of the omissions: 35. The angels worship Him. 36. Christ as God dwelling among men. 37. Great company of preachers prior to JS. 38. Preaching gospel of peace to the ends of the world - after "great apostasy" and before JS. 39. "Their sound is gone out into all lands". 5

I think the court will uphold DOMA and also uphold Prop 8. Is will do so under two premises. The first goes back to polygamy and the Supreme Court ruling upholding the federal law. The second is on the basis that the right to marriage is up to the states except when it relates to race. The only question I see is whether it will rule that a marriage legal in one state must be recognized as legal i

The orchestra and soloists were pros. It was a very impressive cast. And I mean VERY impressive - equal to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir etc. No, perhaps better.
