Think of this in Jeff Foxworthy’s voice: If the leader of your religion claims that his personal pet peeve is the literal will of God…you might be in a cult.

I certainly don’t know better, so I definitely won’t correct you. ;) The point I was trying to make (obviously not that well) was from a Mormon perspective. Jesus revealed the D&C to Joe, but somehow didn’t know the word “coffee.” The temple ceremony was revealed, but Jesus couldn’t come out and tell us what we weren’t supposed to laugh about (but we did have to make a sacred

The prohibition against loud laughter is great example of what I hate about Mormonism (and really, most religions). In the temple, we were told to take a sacred vow “before God, angels, and these witnesses” to avoid loud laughter, but what the F did that even mean? During all my years of activity, tithing, and temple attendance, I never got a straight answer. Does it mean don’t laugh?

I really like the fact that my hobby (music) actually pays me. I don’t get a lot of money, but I do get paid. Not many people get paid for their hobbies. For example, if you’re passionate about golf, you’re not going to get paid for playing unless you’re very good.

For those of you who don’t know, the LTM was the Language Training Mission. It preceded the MTC (the MTC opened a week or two after I departed for the mission field). Recently, I got in touch with a friend from my mission with whom I hadn’t spoken in many years. I was delighted to hear that he (like me) had not only given up on the Mormon church, he had formally resigned his membership. We

In the 1980s I was in a rock band that was comprised of TBMs. The only one in the band that wasn't a returned missionary was on our stake high council. We carefully scrutinized the lyrics of the songs we performed. We prayed before every rehearsal and performance. Even back then, it felt a little weird, and looking back, it seems even worse. Eventually, we added a keyboard/sax player who wasn

I thought about Steve last evening as I finished reading “Ezra Taft Benson and the Making of the Mormon Right” by Matthew L. Harris.

You hit the nail right on the head. Honesty is incompatible with being fully accepted in Mormonism, and definitely incompatible with moving up in the hierarchy of the church.

I just saw a study that stated that the average age for a child to stop believing in Santa is eight. So…there’s a good chance that a child still believes in Santa on their eighth birthday, but somehow they can make the “choice” to get baptized? For those of us who were once active members-how many times did you hear a parent tearfully express pride in their child for “choosing” to

For countries that include religious affiliation in their census, the percentage of Mormons is always lower (sometimes dramatically lower) than what the church claims.

As I understand it, no innocent bystanders were harmed, but I’m glad I wasn’t there when it happened. The only reason I was in the mall was to kill some time between two holiday events.

Sexual behavior is prohibited at nudist resorts, so if Mary didn’t have a cabin (or at least a camper) at the resort, it truly was a virgin birth.

When Mary was told by the angel that she would give birth to Jesus, her reaction was (Luke chapter 1, NIV): 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you.” OK, I’ll admit to having a dirty mind, but this makes it sound like the Holy Spirit was planning on pulling out.

I’ve made a few videos of me performing music, and I put them on YouTube. The most popular one has fewer than 300 views. I don’t think that qualifies me as “being in a music video.”

I have been to a nudist resort a few times, and to a couple of clothing-optional hot springs (when clothing is optional, I opt for no clothing). The only downside is that you don't get the protection of the holy garments. ;)
