There are thousands of “gods” that are worshipped throughout the world, and countless “correct” ways of worship. If there really is a god, and there really is one true church to worship said deity, any sincere seeker of truth would come to the same conclusion. That is clearly not the case. Forum: Recovery Board
Will say: obedience brings blessings from heaven.
Won’t say: we appreciate your tithing and other donations, but if you, your family, or your community have a great need, please keep your charity close to home. Forum: Recovery Board
If there is a god, he/she/it isn’t represented by any religion that I have encountered, and they certainly don’t want us to know about them.
If there is one god, and one correct way to worship said deity, any sincere individual seeking the truth would come to the same conclusion. Forum: Recovery Board
I served my mission in Thailand (way back in the 20th century). When I heard that a temple was announced for Bangkok, my reaction was why?!?! I assumed that it was going to be a small mctemple that wouldn’t see much use and would likely be staffed by senior missionaries.
Are there really enough Thais who have temple recommends and are eager to attend, or is this just another billboard for TS Forum: Recovery Board
I remember that Sunday evening very well. My family had invited a Mormon family that we knew well to have dinner and spend the evening with us. I had never heard of the Beatles, but the family we had invited over had two teenage girls, so we all gathered around the TV to watch. My first reaction was “why is everyone screaming,” but I soon became a fan, and have remained on for the nearly 60 y Forum: Recovery Board
There is some speculation, and a few guesses, as to what a crisping pin is, but nobody knows. Yes, it’s trivial, but it’s like so much in the scriptures-lots of speculation, but no certainty, when it comes to “God’s word.” Forum: Recovery Board
“The question is, as the older members (the Baby Boomers) die off, are there enough younger members to replace them?”
I resigned my membership, but my five baby boomer siblings range from semi-active to deeply committed. None of their children attend church. Forum: Recovery Board
It was not a factor in my leaving, but I did notice that the closer we came to Y2K, the less church leaders spoke about Christ’s return being nigh. The second coming had been a successful scare tactic for decades, but I think they realized that it had become a “boy who cried wolf” kind of thing. Forum: Recovery Board
Middle Easterners riding a boat to the Americas?
Crazy-did this nut case then claim that these were the principal ancestors of the indigenous people in the Americas? Forum: Recovery Board
They require 10% of income (usually interpreted as gross income) to enter the temple and do the magic needed to be exalted. In addition to tithes, there is pressure to give additional money (fast offering, etc.). Couple that with the fact that nobody at the local level receives a salary (other churches have professional clergy, and other paid positions). That’s a lot of money to put into the ha Forum: Recovery Board
Matthew 5:43-44:
You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

If those folks think that turning the other cheek is weak and no longer works, I can’t imagine they’ll be too responsive to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Especially when they hear Jesus’ explanation of who their neighbors are. Forum: Recovery Board
Evangelical Christian leader Russell Moore revealed this week that many evangelical pastors have become alarmed that their congregants have become so militant that they are even rejecting the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Moore said that multiple pastors had told him disturbing stories about their congregants being upset when they read from the famous "Sermon on the Mount" in which Chri Forum: Recovery Board
Cremation is one of an endless list of things that are often believed to be Mormon doctrine, even though it's not "official" doctrine. And as we all know, nobody knows what actually is official doctrine.
Even from a book titled "Mormon Doctrine." McConkie states:

I don’t want to comment on politicians or journalists, but keeping with the intent of this board: in mormonism, lying just seems to be the way things are done.
Do youth want to deal with the shame of what might be revealed in a bishop’s interview? Sometimes being less than truthful keeps things from being uncomfortable.

Eternity in the celestial kingdom or coffee? Tough choice.
I know that I’m a small minority here, but I don’t like the taste of coffee at all, or tea. I think that beer tastes disgusting (mass produced beers-I have tried some tasty microbrews, but nothing I like enough to drink on a regular basis).

The Holy of Holies: the room in the SLC temple where the prophet goes to meet with god. I’ve heard that the door can only be opened from the inside, so the prophet can only enter when the almighty himself opens the door.
I wonder how the room ever gets cleaned. Would god open the door for the members assigned for cleaning, or does a celestial janitorial crew do the work? Forum: Recovery Board
Even if TSCC knew that missionaries would bring in no converts, they would still pressure people to serve missions. With senior missionaries, they get free labor for jobs that would often command a high salary. For the youth, they get kids immersed in church devotion 24/7 during a time when they could be going to college or otherwise starting to learn about the world, and about themselves. The Phillips case probably wasn’t the main reason for the essays, but I do believe that it was a factor. TSCC probably wasn’t worried about actually losing a fraud case, but exposing doctrinal and historical deception in a court of law law is public relations loss for the church, even if they win the case.
