Ah, yes, the Smiths just outside city limits. I remember that store. Some of the locals were livid, but it did a brisk Sunday business. I saw a similar phenomenon in Texas, where engineers moving in to work at Texas Instruments diluted the Southern Baptist population and legalized alcohol sales. I fully expect as tech companies move into the area near Point of the Mountain, and college edu

Is this a gullibility test, or what? As a matter of course, I take anything on Ex-twitter with a bag of salt. Ditto anything from Nancy Mace, which makes OP a two-bagger. While I am not familiar with the safeguards for animal research, I am familiar with the safeguards for human research, as a participant in studies, having a family member who engaged in human medical research, and as a med

To be fair, I think JS was trying for a media hit with the BoM, and founding a religion was something he stumbled into as a Plan B, when the BoM did not turn out to be a best-seller.

I think we need a Hale-Bopp Award to go with the Darwin Award, for people killing themselves over perfectly normal and predictable astronomical events. I am constantly amazed that there are still people who believe in astrology, but then, there are still people who at least claim to believe in a flat earth, an even more absurd proposition. In somewhat related news (people believing the absu

Highland, UT is a previously dry city in NE Utah County, and it is very Mormon. It is next to Alpine, UT, and near the entrance to American Fork Canyon and Timpanogos National Monument. The city was only incorporated in 1977, which surprised me. It had 2,400 residents at the time. It now has 20,000. And of course their self-image was that they have "values", so no alcohol allowed, pe

I take that as a yes, all owners of improperly registered vehicles go straight to hell. They do not pass Pearly Gate Go, nor collect 200 Celestial Dollars. You know, if Washington actually cared, they could fix the problem by either enforcing their law, or aligning their fee structure to be about the same as what neighboring states charge. They apparently consider it not worth the trouble.

The technical term for that is "death-bed remittance." :)

So I assume anyone who dies in Washington with Idaho plates on their car is going straight to hell. ;)

That Mormon guy does run at the mouth/keyboard. Jeez. He claims to have an associate degree in general education from Ricks College. I’ve never heard of a degree in general education. I wonder how that works.

Here you go. A nine character google search “pfas Utah” turned up a web page exactly on point put out by the Utah Dept of Environmental Quality. That looks like a good starting place. https://deq.utah.gov/pollutants/per-and-polyfluoroakyl-substances-pfas

We already have our knickers in a bunch over arsenic in the exposed GSL lakebed. Now you want us to worry about PFAS? Take a number and get in line. You are of course welcome to do the research yourself. It's not like there is any advantage to having your computer located in Utah.

I will be in town then, though I can arrange to leave if that would improve the ambiance. I think I can rustle up a "4 corndogs for $5" coupon at Der Weinerschnitzel.

>why not change some of the details of the relatives That's easy. It's a spectacular lack of integrity. If what the Mormons do lacks integrity, that's on them. If what you do lacks integrity, that's on you.

What do you mean members aren't allowed to have them? I don't recall anyone anywhere in Mormondom being excommunicated for having tattoos. Yeah, it's frowned upon, but not allowed?

I don’t see the problem, though I’m not sure why they would green screen in the chair. People in wheelchairs can sit in regular chairs, they just may need help to transfer. People on the news or in zoom meetings routinely insert fake backgrounds. Reporters have been known to wear a jacket and tie/blouse and jeans. FDR managed to hide the fact that he was paralyzed from the waist down after po

Yeah, but that is a separate issue. You can “undo” your own ordinances, at least as long as you are alive. As far as the legal system is concerned, your church membership and marriage automatically end when you die, regardless of what the church claims.

Rusty will do his damndest to hang on until he hits 100 and be the only PSR to do so. And if he just hangs on a few more weeks, he can get credit for having announced over 50% of LDS temples. So I think he is good through October. Oaks seems to be in good health for his age. The other two should not buy green bananas.

The legal system considers a contract to be an agreement between two or more people or organizations. Dead people cannot agree to anything, and therefore cannot be a party to a contract. Marriage is a contract, and is often referred to that way. Baptism is also a contract, though it is generally not referred to that way. So, as far as the law is concerned, no valid contract exists, so there is

So out of about 4,000 stakes/districts, there was a net increase of 16. That's an increase of one third of one percent. Number of children of record was one half of one percent of total church membership, also a very low figure. Of course they don't actually know about births to parents who no longer have any real connection to the church. That's the downside of padding the total membership fi

I have 2 LDS friends that are/were in stake leadership positions. They both have said I would be surprised at how many cafeteria Mormons there are that are among the supposed stalwarts that show up most Sundays, accept callings, etc. I think the garment emphasis this GC is an attempt to push back on cafeteria Mormonism. For a segment of the Mo population, that will be the final straw and they

I didn't know that. I got my PB from him way back when. Mom always considered herself a privileged Mormon, what with a brother who was an SP, and all. Anyhow, she had somebody contact Eldred G for a PB appointment, and got it for me. And they say women have no power in the church. Pshaw. Never underestimate the power of being a pest. Maybe I should have kept a copy of my PB. May be a collec

> Telling people not do something makes them want to > do it more. Oh, I don't know. The number of people who smoke in the US is way down. That seems to have worked out OK. And name a scientific belief from the 1600s that has been soundly contradicted by experimental evidence, yet the scientific community refused to alter their belief? Just one example is sufficient. I'll wait.

I didn't see any of GC, but Gordon Monson, the local print gadfly for the church over at the SLTrib, wrote a totally glowing review of Uchtdorf's talk, mentioning all the things it wasn't. The implication was that the other talks exhibited the faults Uchtdorf's talk lacked. Excerpt's from Monson's column: He said everyone wants to be happy, but not everyone is happy. He didn’t indicate that
