It's just the human equivalent of a dog peeing on the state capitol to mark its territory. The purpose is to prove that the christers are in charge here. The atheists of course pee directly over the christer pee, and the dance goes on. The christers are still pissed off (see, it really is a peeing contest) about the Supreme Court decision in 1963 that stopped them from cramming Christian pray

"Force" has nothing to do with it. How many generations back has everything to do with it. One Asian ancestor seven generations back, or ten Asian ancestors ten generations back would both result in about one percent Asian DNA.

Antivaxxers are questioning authority in the same way in the same way people driving 80 in residential neighborhoods are questioning authority. They pose a clear threat to themselves and others. BTW, "Superdell" Shanze was arrested for doing exactly that (very high speed residential driving, repeatedly) in Draper a few years ago. He's our local nutcase, famous for his malevolent sens

Las Vegas is my personal idea of going to hell. DisneyLand is second. If you want cheaper/cooler/less crowded, travel in April or May. September or October are also nice. If you have school age children, that doesn't work so well, but eventually... Seattle, British Columbia, Alberta are all nice and generally cool this time of year. You can go urban or mountain in all three places. It is n

I know Vern, and I was debating whether to post his obituary here, but I guess I don't have to make that decision! He only had about 5 weeks from diagnosis to death, so he had to hustle to get his affairs in order and write his obituary. I'm hoping to scatter some of his ashes in Bears Ears (among other places) in a few weeks. Ya done good, Vern.

The fact they find the incident humiliating proves they are not totally brain dead. They know it hurts their cause and they know why. The white male resentment is worth a giggle. I once worked for a software company in Utah where one of the software engineers got on his soapbox about that. The irony was that every single high paying job in the company (35 of about 50 employees) was held by a w

NHM is one of the best pieces of evidence supporting the BoM, and it is a pathetic piece of evidence. That tells you how piss-poor the rest of their "evidence" is.

A) stock market decline? Last one of those was 2007, when the Dow dropped to 6,500 or so. It is presently 21,000 and change. Just in terms of ROI, the City Creek money would have earned a mountain of money had they put it in the stock market instead. Over the next century, the land downtown may do better, unless our overdue earthquake hits. b)Their benefit package includes a stock market po

Money laundering? You do realize that tithing income is tax-free already, right. Converting it into a taxable asset may be many things, but it most certainly is not money laundering. They hoped it would make them money, and it probably is. They also wanted to keep downtown SLC looking good, and succeeded there too.

Since you made a definitive statement, I'd like to see your evidence that there is only one question needs to be asked, and that your question happens to be that one question. I've already achieved enlightenment, so feel free to skip that part.

WordPerfect, which was a large corporate campus, didn't serve coffee on campus when it was new, mid to late 1980s. People coming there from around the country for training classes complained ( a lot, I would imagine). They added coffee machines in the cafeteria. I had some association with WP in the early 1990s. Coffee was available in the cafeteria, which was the same building the training co

Tip of the hat to Darren, Hie and Cabbie. Nice to read an actual sensible dicussion about scientific research, as opposed to something along the lines of 'do your own research. It is well known that vaccines don't work.' I hate having to adjust my blood pressure meds after reading some of the stuff passed off as science here. (Yes, being hyperbolic :)

If you have all the assets of a multi-billion dollar corporation at your disposal, your salary is largely irrelevant/symbolic. Not a few ceos have salaries of $1 a year.

I have a friend who works in the movie industry, and they do have a "speak only when spoken to" rule with star talent when on set. It does not extend to no eye contact as far as I know. The rationale is that the stars are trying to mentally run through their lines or whatever, and if every cast or crew member who wanted to say "I talked to Emma Stone today!" got to chime in

Aspartame consists of two amino acids derived from egg white. It is essentially a protein, which is why it can't be heated. It does what egg white (or any other protein) does when you heat it. It coagulates and changes flavor. It is an irreversible change. You can't unboil an egg. Aspartame also has the same number of calories, gram for gram, as table sugar. The difference is that it takes onl

This is utter nonsense. The very first thing your body does with table sugar (sucrose) is that an enzyme, sucrase, splits the weak chemical bond in sucrose, converting it to equal parts glucose and fructose. From that point on in your body, glucose is glucose, period. It doesn't matter whether it came from sucrose, HFCS, or honey. BTW, honey also consists of already separated glucose and fruc

Are you serious? First of all, the subject of the thread was how much does it cost to run BYU, not how much they subsidize tuition, though the two are related. Congrats on your tuition subsidy. All the rest of us who went to BYU got one too. I don't see where that is the point. Secondly, this was a thread from six years ago, which makes your reply a little late to the party. And what are

Students who are expelled from from BYU have never lost "all their academic credits". They may lose their last semester if they are excommunicated or expelled before the end of the semester. Even then, they ought to negotiate with the university to be allowed to finish the current semester, after which they will leave. The school may well be amenable to that if it will let them avoid a

Unsafe compared to what? Columbia? East LA? Kiev? Being brainwashed in Rexburg? Actually, considering the steady drizzle of incidents of murder or attempted murder of teenage girls in Utah recently, the case can be made that being a young woman in Utah is hazardous to one's health. The worst part of a mission is the general mindf***edness of it all, and that is more or less the same regardl

You've been out for 10 years, and you're afraid that there are Mormons out there with spiders just waiting for the chance to poison you? Sorry, that's tin-foil hattery. About the only thing that gets "hurt" when people leave Mormonism is feelings, and your net worth if your spouse decides to divorce you over leaving the cult. Very rarely stalking or vandalism happens (heard of
