I am not so sure that GC talks will be reactionary to the recent flak over women's access to the priesthood. I think GC talks are written prepared several months before GC rolls around. Whoever vets the talks before GC has the obvious Mormon ear. Look how many times dubious and inflammatory remarks routinely pass by. The church really ought to PAY a group of exmos and nevermos to preview each

In a 1984 Q&A published in the New Era, a former stake president from Ammon, Idaho, shared this advice: “While it is best to avoid the use of ‘playing cards,’ my personal experiences indicate that our family has enjoyed many benefits from playing games with cards. At a time when amusements are generally enjoyed alone, for example TV viewing and video game playing, we in our family li

My family played cards, sometimes card games associated with gambling~ blackjack and poker. We didn't play for $$$, just bragging rights. At church, the priesthood would set goals~ it could be for hometeaching, temple trips or service projects. Which ever group did the most they won bragging rights and could rib others all month long. I was reminded over and over that what the Goops did as

-and knew that it wasn't the "correct" church because they didn't feel the spirt there. This is what I used to hear during a "trip report" testimony. People weren't supposed to talk about vacation trips on fast and testimony Sunday, but members who went to Europe were usually big tithe payers~ leaders were smart to leave them alone and let them babble about their vacation b

nd her unusual cost-cutting strategies ????? I am going to throw out terrible ideas to be frugal. - Not serving any snacks to children - Dumpster diving for tossed out food (I have relatives who have been doing this for years- I refuse to eat at their home or any food sent by them. - Going to a river, stream or creek with buckets so you can live with water shut off. - Putting your ele

Yes, they expect others to visit their Mormon church, but they make all kinds of excuses why they can not visit other churches. Here's a sample of reasons they can not attend other denominations. 1. I have a calling. Church will grind to a halt if I am not there. 2. There's a special speaker or church leader coming to visit and I can't miss this Sunday. And this excuse will be used to fore

Were the teen moms shunned by the RS group? The girls who were a little older than me were exed for breaking the law of chastity. That was the stake president's policy. Save for a baby shower at a member's house, the pregnant teens were banished from all church activities. I finally crossed paths with one of them at a store years later when I returned from serving a mission. Her life was final

Maybe the church will retire Lucy and introduce Karen. Only an out of touch church committee would do that.

I really hated the temple experience because the way the church ran it. They wanted you to enter, move quickly and get the hell out when you were done. Additionally, the workers were rude and uncaring. And I seriously thought there was something wrong with me for not having spiritual experiences~ I didn't see my ancestors inside, have my prayers answered, learn anything or feel good about going t

The first unredacted entry in Franke’s journal, however, notes Hildebrandt received a blessing May 21 from a person she identifies as a local Latter-day Saint temple president. I think that's Mormon code for a Second Annointing in the temple. It's kind of disappointing that truly horrible people are treated as VIP, cream of the crop just because they are extreme narcissists who continuall

I've been told that an endowment session can run a fast 45 minutes now. It used to be an easy 2+ hour session. It was even slower if I was there trying to tie those damn hat strings and trying to switch the robe and not wear it inside out.

Most members (even TBM's) resented being pressured to convert the few close friends who were not members of the church. That being said, Mormons felt the reason the church had an active missionary program was so members could focus on other duties of the church~ don't bother us. My mom was called as a ward missionary several times. It was her responsibility to pass around a monthly calendar in

I was able to read more of the back story about the SF Bay Area ward attempts to recognize the women leaders by permitting them to sit on the stand. Unfortunately, this is an organization which has a church policy about every miniscule detail. Any deviation is expected to reported and corrected. No exceptions. Always forgetting a part: It was right before I left the church in 1998. In mo

Powerpoint slides can be easily changed, translated, added and deleted. The church is probably kicking itself for not using them sooner vs. making films.

I think the church has a long plan to have newer temples in a metroplex area so the church can close one for repairs, renovations and possible repurposing of the lot. For example, if a location becomes less than favorable then it won't be a big deal to move to the other one. The current LV temple was completed in 1989. It's 35 years old.

I don't think there's enough PIMO members here who are paying attention. Personally, I think this is mostly a yawn real estate transaction. I think members are well accustomed to the church buying anything it pleases. I think this would have been huge back in the 1980s or 1990s. Members were less used to the church flexing its financial muscle. While it's true that the church started to kick o

It's very bizarre. It clearly is creepy if not stalking. If they want to do street contacting then the missionaries need to park the car and get out and walk. That way it's more obvious to everyone who is out and about. My odd experience was GOING to their open temple event and asking them simple questions which I perceived were largely unwelcomed.

I wasn't a good liar. I foolishly believed that if you did your best that was good enough for the church. I always thought there would be praise and appreciation for volunteering for all the hundreds of projects and free labor. Instead, nothing was said or more often there was criticism of those who donated their time. Who needs that? I have better memories of standing in the line at the local

I think women do this as well as men. I am guy who often attended dances (not necessarily church ones) who would check out my friends before we all marched into the event. We would all look over each other from head to toe (clean shoes, stains on clothing, belt or suspenders straight, necktie good?- we actually might help tie or adjust the length or even change it out if it didn't match, we al

That was fast, thanks. I wouldn't want to get on any boat with any of them. I used to suffer through similar experiences when know-it-all dads would accompany their sons on scouting camping trips. While I have complained about some of the scout leaders being totally inept, I was fortunate to have a couple who really knew how to camp safely. One jackass dad didn't know how to start a camp

While reading some of the comments from the SLtrib regarding the church and women having tremendous power in the church, I came across this interesting story: It's like when Nelson unironically told the story of how his family went on a rafting trip. He was the only one who fell out of the raft. But then when they came to the next set of rapids, he made them pull over to the side of the river
