Shakespeare's day: once always men as women, some of his plays explicitly require it even today. Japanese Kabuki and Noh: always been that way. Brigham Young's son, the Three Stooges, Lucille Ball, Carole Burnett, Benny Hill, Monty Python. . . Apparently there was a point somewhere around 2010 when cross-dressing became not only objectionable but "grooming". The only thing t

Spenny really screwed those pronouns up. He told us we must use them because "thee" and "thou" and "thy" indicate more respect for God. But "thee" and "thou" are in fact the familiar forms, what you would use with your family or most intimate friends, whereas "you" and "your" are the honorific forms. He completely bungled

First, "the nihilism of the sociopath" is a moral nihilism, an ethical nihilism; and second, the sociopath by nature relies on others as sources of physical and emotional supply. He a

There's a difference between scientific and philosophical inquiry about the nature of reality on the one hand and, on the other, the nihilism of the sociopath. For the latter needs other people: they are the resources that enable him to live beyond his own physical, financial, and emotional means.

I know you are in retirement now and off chasing white and delightsome balls as the stroke count approaches infinity, but there are times when I wish you were a moderator here as well as that other website. At the very least it would make for some great moderator meetings as you and Tevai argued over beverage choices.

Why is it that Christian bigots think others will see their hatred and conclude, "hey, that's the religion for me and my kids?"

To the contrary. I'm happy! I'm rejoicing because once again Jesus (not to be confused with Jesus) has given the world irrefutable proof that Joseph Smith was a prophet. All those SEC and Big Ten football players who point to the sky when they score a first down must feel foolish now!

And why would Jesus (not to be confused with Jesus) allow that in his infinitely expanding portfolio of planets?

Don't think your irony goes unnoticed. Winning a single football game may not be enough to prove divine favor. But I'd bet BYU's win-loss record has been over 50% for decades now, and that--remember the Bell Curve you're always lauding?--cannot be random. It's just sad that you cannot see the implications of that.

I remember the first few times I spent extended times in East and Southeast Asia, where there is a lot of excellent Buddhist/Hindu/Shinto/Animist art. Before returning to my family home, I bought some inexpensive religious statuary as souvenirs. My parents were impressed. They are very TBM but they generally have a good sense of aesthetics, so they put the pieces up in prominent places aroun

I've seen both, but definitely a lot of plastic. In fact, this type of plastic cup . . . https://store.churchofjesuschrist.org/wcsimages/LDSCAS/products/000/15700_81056000_000_p_348.jpg . .. used to be offered on the church's website. https://store.churchofjesuschrist.org/usa/en/sacrament-cups-81056000 I guess the revenues are no longer worth the public relations cost. I am not a fan of Oliver Stone in general, but as someone who has studied Nixon in depth I his Stone's biographical treatment of the former president is remarkably insightful. And yes, it gives Nixon's childhood environment and experiences the attention they deserve.

I'm not saying monarchy is good for every country, nor that it is a net positive for any country, just that at times it is beneficial to some polities. As for making America great again, I just hope we can declare victory and stop making it greater before there's nothing left.
