Again, I agree on Putin's character and actions. But what is his strategic objective? Obtain international recognition for the breakaway provinces, add the southern corridor to Odessa, both of the above plus the installation of a neutral government in Kiev, occupy and annex the whole country, or absorb the country as a first step towards Poland or the Balts? Unless we can answer that quest

True, anybody, that is what he is doing. But that doesn't explain the reasons behind his move, which is the first step in stopping him.

There are definitely parallels. I would, however, suggest the most important is one that you didn't mention. Hitler was more an egoist than an ideologue. His ideology said that the survival of the German nation was more important than anything, yet when push came to shove Hitler declared that the people were not worthy of him and deserved to die. The fan of Wagner then opted for his version

World War One ended without Germany being invaded, which allowed Germans and Hitler to argue that they had not really lost the war (sort of like American elections) and hence had been betrayed by bureaucrats. That played into Nazi propaganda and contributed to WWII.

No, but genes that result in a survival advantage propagate themselves more prolifically than those that don't. It follows that traits encouraging group loyalty are selected for and not against.

Oh, I agree about Putin and about sanctions. I just want this sorted out fast. So increase the sanctions rapidly and hard. But also prepare to start negotiations at the earliest possible moment, When dealing with problems like this, you have to think two steps ahead. Otherwise you end up occupying Iraq.

Okay, summer, here goes. I'm not sure what Putin wants. I do not think anyone should take what he says as true, so we should look at his actions to gauge his intentions. If we do that, it looks like he wants to take the southern corridor to Crimea in order to secure that connection to Russia and to install a biddable government in Kiev. He may also want to take the broader region of territo

Two points. First, you say there were plenty of these in the early Christian and Islamic centuries but your source describes 70 such sets of plates found in a single location. Are there other plates from other sites? Second, the article says "academics are divided as to their authenticity" and likewise hedges a couple more times, saying things like "if their dates are verifi

You have to remember there was no single "story." Even before Joseph's death the various contenders were feuding. BY knew that Emma was a contender, or a kingmaker, and correctly viewed her as a threat. Once Joseph had died, the knives came out. There was no clear succession plan and the struggle for preeminence was intense. It would therefore be a mistake to think they were engag

Correct. "Ukraine" literally means "outskirts" or "borderlands." When one says "the Ukraine," it inevitably raises the question "borderlands of what?" The answer is of course Russia. So Ukrainians prefer the term "Ukraine" without the article. This usage is more consonant with the Ukrainians' desire to be treated as an independe

Okay, I'll confess. I have read MB twice and am glad I did. The structure of the thing is almost unique--the way that Melville discusses so many collateral topics, always with Ahab looming unspoken in the background so that when the tale returns to him he's an overwhelming and well-known presence; rarely, I suspect, has anyone described such a monumental character in so few words. I also love h

Hey, I love reading about the specific qualities of oil produced variously by right whales, beaked whales, and narwhals! More seriously, I had a very smart friend in college--a literature major, for her sins--who compiled a list of the worst classical literature. Top of the list? Billy Budd. I believe, however, that her selection owed at least something to having not yet read Moby Dick.

I'd posit the opposite: JS heard about engraved plates and adopted the idea with, or without, having ever seen such a thing. For there is no evidence that any plates, as distinct from something substantial under a cover, ever existed. I simply don't see why any particular unevidenced claim by a serial liar should be taken seriously. It's a bit like saying that surely some of the D&C cha

I do too. Some sins are beyond forgiveness and the focus must be on the needs of the victim, not the victimizer. That is, in an abstract sense, why many of us are no longer Mormons.

The rule is that whatever happened before baptism, save some egregious sins, are expunged at baptism. Subsequent minor sins are subject to repentance and, where appropriate, restitution. Mid-level sins like petting oneself or others additionally require confession to an ecclesiastical voyeur. It follows that stealing 30 quid from someone would ideally be resolved by returning the money and r

I'm not sure what all the equivocations and circumlocutions are for. Your statement--"racism is the belief that a group of people who look different from another group of people were born of inferior circumstances and are inherently less capable or less deserving in some significant way"--is very close to the dictionary definition. You know what isn't part of the definition? An
