A classmate of mine was on a baseball scholarship. He'd been a high school phenom and was playing for a major university until a shoulder injury that required surgery cost him his scholarship. He knew that given the injury he'd never make the majors, but considered himself lucky to land another scholarship at our university which wasn't of the same caliber in baseball. At that point he just wante

I haven't delved too deeply into all the coverage of this, but a couple things intrigue me. The main one is that the suspect was a first semester PhD student. I would think he'd mostly be adjusting to his program of study, which I presume is fairly rigorous, and his duties as a teaching assistant, not to mention learning his way around the new campus, and Pullman. That's all fairly stressfu

I’ve had cancer, and lost my wife to it a few years ago. So I agree: cancer sucks. Hang in there. Don’t give up. Fingers crossed for you.

Ok, this is just kind of odd and unexpected. I pulled up YouTube and it suggested this: https://youtube.com/shorts/9SV7ZOu76yc?feature=share

Another cruel irony in this is that given the morg’s strategy of rewarding and propping up the succe$$ful, even if people finally figure out that the mormon lifestyle hurts them financially, TSCC can just point at the ”leadership” as success stories of people who are ”living right.” In other words, more gaslighting and blaming the victims.

Sad news indeed. When I was a kid in Germany, Pelé had godlike stature. We loved Fußball (soccer), and Pelé was Fußball.

I think another example would be when they ran advertising playing on babies being left at monasteries in medieval Europe. TSCC didn’t even exist then, but they somehow want to take credit for the heart warming stuff. I think that was for their ancestry business.

Perhaps, or simply been programmed to see "immodesty" and "sexuality" anywhere and everywhere (and feel smuggly virtuous or heroic for putting a stop to it). Or, if he truly did receive complaints, then the same could be said about those people.

Speaking of the lyrics, I watched the original clip from Polar Express on YouTube, and now the catchy tune has been stuck in my head for a couple days.

There's a bit more to the lyrics, but they're basically just fun. I recall a Friends episode (I think) in which Joey and someone else point out that you can make anything sound "sexy" by the tone of your voice. Conversely, I think people can see almost anything they want in what others say and do, but it says more about the perceiver in my opinion, especially when it's so far off ba

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2014/12/angels-we-have-heard?lang=eng In order to give the impression that he had special esoteric knowledge, Joseph Smith basically used to just make up details that conflicted with traditional Christianity. (And Joseph's Myth was born.)

There will probably be some forthcoming explanatory gobbledegook about how this is much more accurate than the original, that a girl of t̶h̶i̶r̶t̶e̶e̶n̶ almost 14 wouldn't have had such large breasts and that mothers of that time would have been more modest than depicted in the original painting.

There are two other detail changes in the mormonized version which I don't think the article mentions: 1) The cloth in which the baby is wrapped has been changed from lavender/blue to white. 2) The baby is much whiter (and presumably delightsome-er).

Yes, the cherubs are also missing, presumably because cherubs typically have wings, and their positioning in the original is in keeping with them typically hovering or flying above. The Angels' visit is a significant detail in the Biblical version of the Christmas story.

I just read the thread about changing “coffee” to “cider” in “Sleigh Ride” at the MoTabs Christmas concert: https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,2457286 Anyway, it reminded me of something that happened years ago when my youngest was still in middle school, and that thread is closed, so I thought I’d start a new one for this. Both of my daughters sang in the girls c

Let me just add that the series doesn't need a hyper "mormon" focus. But given the MMM and blood atonement details incorporated in episode 2, I just wish it had more.

We just watched through the end. It's a good series in terms of the stories, but there was no closure re. blood atonement, except maybe that Griffin's life philosophies fail him at the end (I'm being deliberately vague--don't want to spoil it for anyone who wants to watch it). MMM never comes up again either.

Yes, timewise it would have made more sense for the Roy Goode character to have been through MMM, especially since he was adopted.

The important questions is: are the guns allowed or not? ;) If someone pulls a gun in the temple, can only police officers with Temple Recommends respond?

We watched through episode 4 last night. A number of tangential story lines have been introduced. Griffin’s complex character continues to be fleshed out, but this time with some genuinely sympathetic characteristics demonstrated.

Last night my daughters and I watched the 2nd episode, and almost half of the 3rd before turning off the TV. The 2nd episode wasn't as horrific as I thought it would be (https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/11/182479/godless-frank-griffin-true-story-mountain-meadows-massacre), but perhaps because I know the MMM story. Anyway, I thought their treatment/description of MMM was fairly accurat

I do think he tried to familiarize himself with Mormon missionaries. He claims to be from Provo (later admits TX?). And I think he realized that he was swearing too much, because he tried to switch back to a golly gee willikers vocabulary at one point.

I think near the end that the interviewer admits to the companion that he's not a Mormon. (but it's been several hours since I watched it one time through at 1.5 speed...)

I'm not sure what the point is. Nudists aren't pedophiles? Obviously nudists ARE aroused at certain (appropriate) times; otherwise there'd be no second-generation nudists. And, nothing precludes them from becoming pedophiles.

It's certainly close to my moniker here though. Anyway, some random thoughts... There was some talk on reddit about the efforts of non-law-enforcement group potentially hindering legal action (or something
