“Swelling motions” are a means of distinguishing knowledge from mere beliefs (v. 28). Um…it’s difficult to know what to say to this. A significant portion of Alma 32 was dedicated to establishing the necessity of humility as a prerequisite to faith, yet verse 28 tells the seeker that they have an internal truth detector that, although indistinguishable from ordinary non supernatural emoti

The way I remember, I saw no reason to question a model of perfection because doing so was nonsensical. Even when I decided I didn’t need anything the church offered, it was hard. But I started seeing cracks. Cracks where there weren’t supposed to be cracks. How could there be cracks? Then came the rabbit hole.

This group is living proof of that. The empathy here is genuine and intense. There’s no way you can get there through culturally induced infantilism.

But that’s not today’s church. The Q15 expect absolute obedience. They might as well get pinstriped suits, since they see themselves as Don Corleone in “The Godfather”. Members are loyal to the family out of devotion, but also out of fear. Disobey and God will get you. You could be burned at the second coming, cast into outer darkness, or become a hopelessly cursed apostate. The church ma

To everything there is a season. Spring has come and Mormonism is melting. God has it all under control. The despots at the top can’t help themselves because they aren’t supposed to. I remember the feeling. It’s like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Your guts have to melt into a soup first. Your family member will doubt their sanity. Assure them they’re not going crazy. They

“The first traumatic event was my assault,” Junca says. “And the second traumatic event was the reaction of this institution that I trusted. And the latter seems to have had more devastating effects on my life than the actual sexual assault."

It will never be like it was. Also, with the abysmal retention rates among young males, the pool of RMs is drying up. Once today’s women reach menopause, then what? The leaders can’t think their way out of the box they’re in because such thinking has been selected out. She will sink, dear Rose. And I don’t think TSCC is as well off as it looks. Cash comes in but it also goes out. Th

This is why the church is going to die. It’s beyond redemption. Nothing can fix its dysfunction. Nice try, Sam. They are delivered up.

I think it’s meant to implode, but the esoteric view isn’t necessary. The church set up this whole unrecoverable situation. Orthodoxy gets tyrannical over time if nobody is pushing back. It’s not their fault, it’s just how the human mind works. We have a United States because Jefferson understood this. The church could be saved if the members raised a big enough stink, but the church has

The usual advice is to just take a break. Later on you can try a church that isn’t all culty. Just say you need to take a break. You can’t sustain the leaders at all and you can’t believe JS was a prophet. So, what are you doing there? If they wanted you there, they’d have fruitful discussions with God about all these gaping holes.

Everyone outside the Mormon box might as well be from a different planet. “Please have patience, they are not us.” It’s amazing how much human thought can be constrained. The Mormon world is no place for a brain. Why does TSM seem as if he’s addressing teenagers? Because mentally, that’s what church members are. It’s what constitutes a good Mormon.

Bednar seems to be a meme starter. He’s a word guy, so maybe the Name is a big deal to him. It’s too bad he won’t turn that mind to the church’s problems. But of course, he can see nothing from that side of the “veil”.

They went from money digging to wildcat banking to land speculation to selling new settlers land at highly inflated prices to selling the Army supplies at ridiculously inflated prices to tax subsidized real estate investment to talking you out of your salvation and selling it back to you for 10% of your income. Nice work if you can get it.
