Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech from the March on Washington. I watched a video of that speech today and I was literally brought to tears. I was trying to remember the last time a General Conference talk had that strong of an effect on me. I think it was.......never.

Something tells me a MLK speech that was carefully prepared, screened, and then read off a teleprompter would be...less inspiring.

I have no doubt that "I have a dream" was written, well-prepared, and memorized, it absolutely was not extemporaneous. That doesn't mean it wasn't one of the most inspired speeches ever given.

"Communist leader of the so-called civil rights movement."

(TSC-GA's love to use the adjective "so-called" when they want to slam someone/something.)

Steve Benson has said a lot on this subject.

If a prophet had revealed and stood up for those truths it would have been a lot harder to leave the church.

Why didn't an LD$ prophet ever do that?

Simple. There's more money in lies.

What's sick is being around a bunch of older middle aged & older TBMs who still think MLK was an "evil & divisive" man.

Oldtimer TBM reasoning:

MLK: black man who slept around and yeah he sort of stood for equality and told the truth - but he was still EVIL!

JS: white man who slept around and may have lied and cheated here and there but so what? - GOOD!

This is soo true, I can watch/read speeches from MLK, Mandela, John Brown (my preference), FDR, and Eugene Debbs. There are many others, but how can organization with so many, with so much money, do so little for so few!!!

I was watching a PBS documentary on one of the prominent U.S. Presidents, and it does NOT even matter which one it really was at this point. Gordon B.S. Hinckley had recently been featured on CBS 60 Minutes.

I was overwhelmed with the impression that a certain *man* falls way short in their office / calling as a leader, way short in "standing for something" as they occupy their post.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I had a college professor tell me that the "I have a dream" part of King's speech actually wasn't planned. The next speaker was running late, so they asked King to continue speaking to fill time. If the story is true, he then made up one of the greatest speeches in the history of our country on the spur of the moment. Makes him even more impressive in my mind.

He had given an earlier version of the "I have A Dream" speech in Detroit about a month earlier. As he was reading from his prepared speech in DC, he paused and Mahalia Jackson shouted to him: "Tell them about your dream, Martin." He pushed the prepared notes aside and gave the speech we know today.

Thanks, rocketscientist, for the real story.

MLK, Jr.'s I have a dream speech was most inspiring and IMO it would be impossible for the Mormon 15 to come up with anything remotely inspiring.

I always felt the spirit really strong listening to Paul H. Dunn.
