I attended this year's kickoff for the young women with my daughter last night. Neither of us wanted to go but I had promised my TBM wife who had to work that I would take her.

It was basically an hour long service with refreshments afterwards. Some of the highlights include:

* A 13 year old speaking on the evils of pornography.

* The YW president listing all the reasons the girls are so special. This included telling the latina girls they are daughters of Lehi.

* YW president telling girls they have a lot of power to influence young men and relating a story of a girl that wouldn't date a 19 year old guy because he decided not to serve a mission. Her stance made him change his mind.

* YW president suggesting the girls should like the Book of Mormon and the LDS church on Facebook. That way the whole world can see.

* YW president explaining the LDS church really is a christian church - "it's all about Christ." Apart from the opening and closing prayers that were said "in the name of JC" this was the only reference to Christ in over an hour.

* Branch President told the story of Joseph and Potipher's wife (how he ran away from adultery) and telling the girls they should do the same when it comes to TV, movies, internet, or social situations that are not virtuous.

The good news is I was able to debrief my daughter afterwards. She said she was not going to update like the church on Facebook and laughed when I told her she is "not a daughter of Lehi because well, Lehi didn't exist."

and learning to think for themselves.

I am so glad I missed out on all but 2 or 3 YW meetings/events. The only thing I remember is how obnoxious the native Utahns were.

I didn't have a clue what "masterbation" meant, when the bishop asked me about it.

I'm sure the Mormons like to be the FIRST to introduce young women to sex, so they can immediately link it to the idea that it is nasty, forbidden, and an evil temptation from Satan, etc.

Ha-ha! I'm delighted that the Morg is encouraging youngsters to go online! The Truth is one click away! Keep it up!

like-like-like-like--oops, what's this?

Yes, listening to this 13 year old tell everyone about how addictive porn can be and how it destroys your ability to have normal relationships was a bit surreal. The girl in question is about as molly as they come. I'd be surprised if she has ever seen any. I think most 13 year olds probably have seen some - a stray link here or there on the internet, just not this girl.

There was also a 15 year old girl that talked about chastity. It was funny because her little talk used the phrase "sexual relations" over and over. She probably said it close to 10 times. This girl is very articulate and normally looks everyone in the eye when she speaks. This time she kept her eyes down and read as quickly as possible.

and yet you have a TBM wife, as I did very long time ago. Living reality/Fantasy is not fun. Good luck.

Why have a talk about pornography with young girls? Every Mormon leader knows that Mormon females have no sex drive so looking at porn would mean nothing to them.

I've often amazed that my wife likes sex. Mormon women are bombed over and over with anti-sex messages.

I guess it's to get them ready for marriages where they will be bombed with ideas like this:

"Unfortunately, some married couples fail to realize that sexual experiences were never intended by the Lord to be a mere plaything or merely to satisfy passions and lusts." (Elder Spencer J. Condie, “Finding Marital Unity through the Scriptures,” Ensign, Jul 1986, page 52)

"If it is unnatural, you just don't do it. That is all, and all the family life should be kept clean and worthy and on a very high plane. There are some people who have said that behind the bedroom doors anything goes. That is not true and the Lord would not condone it." (President Spencer W. Kimball, The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p.311-12)

Of course sex is dirty! It's the merging of two sewer systems!

"YW president telling girls they have a lot of power to influence young men and relating a story of a girl that wouldn't date a 19 year old guy because he decided not to serve a mission. Her stance made him change his mind."

How to use sex as a manipulation tool.

Saying the Mormon church is all about Christ is like saying that the office supply store Staples only sells filler for staplers.

I have 7 daughters. 6 are now adult. I attended EVERY single one of those stupid programs with my dd's. How many times does that mean I sat through that trash and believed it? Some years I had 2 or even 3 daughters in YW at the same time, but that is still a lot of New beginnings to sit through. And,of course I thought I was doing the right thing. Thank goodness my 7 year old dd will never have to experience that.

I had a roommate at UVU who kept saying how disgusting it was that a cousin of hers put PORN on her facebook page and she wanted to delete her as a friend immediately. When I saw the pic I had to laugh. It was a picture of her making out with her boyfriend.
