I suspect that the kind of honesty you suggest would do both. The act of disclosure would increase their credibility, but the information that would be disclosed would decrease their credibility.
It's clear they know publication of financial information would cause them more harm than the secrecy does. And that can be for only one reason: There's stuff in those reports they don't want people to know.
