My guess is it's a ploy to remove the porn issue from the 2012 campaign. The "porn is going internet" issue doesn't hold water since many hotels still earn money selling non-porn movies for their guests to view on their in-room tv's. Not everyone travels with a computer or watches movies on 12" screens.

Why would they do that when it is such a money earner? I mean like they are going to go 'moral' after all these years of being 'oral' Give me a break. If they start losing clients to other chains because of this, it will come right back. I mean Utah does have the highest online subscriptions to porn, and if they travel, they would likely use the Lord hotel and still want access there.

I disagree with the author's assertion that there is no connection between the phase-out and Mitt's candidacy.

However, I agree with her that recent GC talks about porn may have come home to roost for Marriott, and porn at Marriott may have been starting to create undesirable publicity for TSCC. After all, the hypocrisy of both in-room porn and in-room BOMs was evident to anyone who stayed at one of their hotels. As she asserts, it wouldn't surprise me if the Marriott board received a little call from the COB.

At the very minimum, I give her credit for acknowledging the depth of the porn problem in Utah and among LDS members (instead of blaming Utah's stats on "less active and nonmembers", which has been the traditional way of dismissing and rationalizing stats like high antidepressant use and teen suicides).

Chains like Holiday Inn and Omni have banned porn for years, without going bankrupt.

It isn't just the porn, it's the whole Spectravision thingie or whatever they call it today. Lots of hotels are doing away with it because it's non-profitable. With all of the 3G and 4G technology, less and less folks are willing to pay $15 per pop to watch a movie. They just watch it on their media devices.

Agree. The columnist seems to be trying to award credit to TSCC for changing the policy. It may just be changing technology. But one thing is certain: Marriott peddled porn for decades when other hotel chains opted not to do so.

Marriott International is only pulling access to porn in the NEW hotel rooms to be built in the near future. Apparently that would tend to suggest that the existing rooms will still be carrying porn.

Receipts are down 39% due to business travelers increasingly bringing their own Netflix, DVD's and laptops.

And it appears that tradition video systems will be phased out in favor of internet-based video-on-demand systems.

Regardless of how the in-room pay per view porn is delivered, look for Romney to be back on the board at Marriott International shortly after his presidential bid fails.
