"Belief, in one of its accepted senses, may consist in a merely intellectual assent, while faith implies such confidence and conviction as will impel to action."
If you've ever gotten the "chills" during church/conference/temple/prayer/scripture reading, then it's time to clean some toilets and fork over some cash!
is...."if I use every big word I know, and link them together in a such a confusing way that people will only understand what I am saying, 'by the spirit.'" People listen will NOT ask what it means for fear that someone will think that they don;t have the spirit.
IMO anyway. That is one confusing, hard to understand sentence. Did you ask what it meant?
"I am entirely incapable of mounting a coherent argument in support of what I believe. So I'm going to do more than ignore your argument, I'm going to actually be condescending to you as well. You see you couldn't understand if you wanted to, because you're using your mind. Stupid you. My actions prove what I feel is true, regardless of whether or not it makes any sense. I have conviction. I don't need to think."
LOL I guess the Cult is trying to appeal to the more intellectual crowd and find another way to say, "The thinking has been done for you. Stop thinking and just believe and do whatever we say."

This is what it means-- Belief means that you think something is true. Faith means you will take action on your beliefs because you know it is true.
"Faith is...things hoped for...not seen" (the famous bible verse).
I totally agree with that...as an atheist.
And, I also agree there's a big difference between mere "intellectual assent" and faith.
But where I vigorously disagree is that faith necessarily leads to God, religion, and especially to a particular religious sect.
I argue that religion is actually a FAILURE of faith, in that religion fills the emperical void with factitious "knowledge" (by faith).
True faith is braving the void without filling it with made-up stuff, and appreciating reality (which is proverbially more interesting than fiction anyway).
Now that I'm an atheist, I'm discovering the priveledge of free-agency, which Mormonism has COMPLETELY backwards. Their concept is nothing more than choosing to sin or not, and all morals are dictated. Real agency is deciding what's right and wrong, and choosing a purpose, not having it dictated to you.

"I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, but it sounds religious so I'll use it."
Mormonism is filled with fake knowledge. Light is truth, truth circumscribed in one great whole, blah, blah, and blah.
What utter, useless nonsense.
Faith is what religious people use to fill up the gaps and cracks created when their nonsensical superstitions and sacred myths collide with what is. What a mind screw. What is is.
Belief: "I believe that means I should stop until I get a green light."
Faith: "I will blow off the red light and go through the intersection. I have faith that no cross traffic is coming and no cop will see me because I am on my way to the three hour block and I will be late if I stop. HF will make it all ok."
It means Talmage was trying to make up his own definition. It is arbitrary. You can make up arbitrary examples that lead to the opposite conclusion: I believe exercise is good for me (leads to action) I have faith that the judicial system is fair (leads to no action).
