http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=14271236In this speech that the majority of which was homophobic, he did make this ironic statement.
"We must never see the day when the public square is not open to religious ideas and religious persons," Elder Oaks said. "The religious community must unite to be sure we are not coerced or deterred into silence by the kinds of intimidation or threatening rhetoric that are being experienced."
It just made me think of the city main street that divided the LDS temple in SLC, from the Church office building. Being a public street, it allowed a "Public square" that was open to contrasting religious views.
The LDS church bought it up about 10 years or so ago, and made it so that the public square went away, and they arrest anyone who goes onto what had been the public square, if they say things that the church doesn't want said. They coerce and silent opposing views on what had been a public square.
But now he acts like doing such a thing is the worst thing that can be done. Just kind of ironic.
